Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My Pedal Force RS Project - II

In deference to blandin and his being the real first build thread for the RS, here I present mine.

Given the success of the Pedal Force RS group buy, mine may be just one of up to one hundred build project threads that eventually get posted, so I decided to start mine just after blandin to avoid the rush!

I am starting with an overview of my plans and a few pictures of parts that I have in hand.

The Plan: Due to blandin's contagious/evil influence and the fact that he has a stable full of Dura-Ace equipped bikes, I have decided to invest exactly the amount in this build than I had planed to. There is no color scheme yet, so far everything is black. I will use something on the bars or tires, just not sure what it is yet.

Despite the fact that I ordered the PF fork, I am going to upgrade to the Easton EC90 SLX. Actual weight 293 grams without including the totally unusable beartrap.

Tires right now are some Vittoria Diamante Pro Light, which have been sitting in a drawer since I got my daughters bike this spring. Weight is 376 grams for the pair.

Dura-Ace pedals come in at 283 grams.

Dura-Ace 53/39 172.5mm crank @ 678 grams.

The Dura-Ace bottom bracket is 98 grams.

Saddle is still up in the air. I have this Selle Italia SLR at 143 grams or I might swap saddles with my Moto, it has a Selle Italia Kit Carbonio that is about 10 grams lighter. It has carbon rails, but is now a year older and I am just not sure I want to risk my butt on an older carbon railed saddle.

A Ritchey 4-Axis 110mm stem to hold up the handlebars. Has to use Ti bolts to get the weight down to the 114 grams you see here.

Dura-Ace rear dérailleur with Ti pivot bolt and limit screws to drop its weight to 175 grams.

Dura-Ace front dérailleur with Ti limit screws and pinch bolt, comes in at 80 grams.

The Performance Forte Theta carbon bottle cages were purchased on sale. It's hard to see in the picture but if you look real close at the upper portion of the cage you will notice that the word Forte does not appear on the cage. Some careful sanding and then some buffing removed the lettering. This one is 26 grams, the other was 25 grams for a total of 51 grams. I have some Aluminum bottle bolts but I forgot to weigh them.

Continued in the next message ...

... Continued from previous message

Dura-Ace brakes. I think they are a beautiful combination of form and function, although they did not really make much of a splash on the Beautiful Brakes thread. These are equipped with Kool-Stop combination pads and are 307 grams for the pair.

Dura-Ace 12-25 cassette, 191 grams. Although I have ridden all year with an 11-23 and can climb most of the hills here in a 39/23 combination, the 25 will come in handy if I am lucky enough to get registered for Assault on Mount Mitchell. I am hoping to meet up with Ostuni and perhaps ride with him a while, until he drops me. The ride for 2007 is on June 11th. I will train by doing a lot of climbing but I still may need to go to a 12-27 if I just can't turn over the 25.

Wheels are 2007 Ritchey WCS Protocols. the weight you see here includes rim tape and skewers. Both front and rear came out to 1647 grams. The advertised weight is measured without rim tape and skewers, therefore the discrepancy.

There is more stuff yet to come. I am trying to see about some custom climbing wheels that would come in lighter than the Protocols I do not know where I will get them yet or who would build them. Stay tuned.

Damn you all to Hell. For a while it seemed like I was going to be the only one with an Easton fork...now several people are choosing them. I'm getting the SL though. My butt will need the extra 50gm. I like that Ritchey stem a lot. They have nice logos too.

WW, welcome to the RS show. You've got me beat in several areas on the gram counting, especially with your hot Easton EC90 SLX. I have to be happy with the lowly SL. My Force group arrived today so I will update my thread with pictures and weights starting tonight. This is too much fun!

Sad to say but the frame is probably on a 'slow boat from China.'

Honestly, I had forgotten about yours. Which, by the way, was also not really the first either. How are things in cold gloomy and wet Pacific Northwest? I hope that you are enjoying your QS2-S, I will take a gander at your pictures.

You list your frame weight at 1130 grams. Is that the actual weight? Site lists 1160 grams for a 58cm frame.

Tell us more about your MG wheels now that you have had them a couple of weeks.

It was 1130g with the plastic bottom bracket cable guide, downtube cable stop adjusters, and the four included bottle cage bolts... Everything else bare. Pleasantly surprised there. Sadly I've returned to Asia for business, and won't be home for a while... but having such a nice bike at home, ready for late spring/summer is strong motivation for me to spend my 35-40 minutes a day on the trainer at 160 bpm.

More stuff to pass along, while I am waiting for the cable guy to show up.

Headset will be a Cane Creek Solos IS. I took this pick of the short cap but will be using the longer conical cap instead. The weight of the headset with the long cap is 70 grams.

I will be using a regular compressor setup to preset the loading on the headset bearings. When everything is set correctly and the stem is tightened I will replace the compressor with this Token carbon stem cap it has a weight of 20 grams.

Here are a few pics of the other parts pre-assembled (I forgot to take pictures of them before I put this together.)
  • FSA K-Wing 44cm carbon handlebars - 280 grams, this is 40 grams over advertised weight.
  • Shimano Dura-Ace brifters - 425 grams, the SRAM and Campagnolo brifters are much lighter.
  • Nokon black shifter and brake cable housing.
  • Power-Cordz cables.
  • Performance simulated carbon handlebar tape, I may replace this with some color cork tape.

I know that others have said that the Power-Cordz are a real waste since they are expensive and have an expiration date. I did this solely for bling reasons. There also is no reason not to go back to standard steel cables when it's time to replace the Power-Cordz. Same holds for the Nokon cables, difficult to install, even harder to route through the handlebars but lighter than regular cable housing and totally compressionless. They also have incredible bling factor. Over time only the liner and cables themselves need replacing so in just a few years they are a break even proposition with Dura-Ace cables and housings.

Also need something to protect the frame bits, I had these sitting in my parts box, Lizard Skins.

I am eagerly awaiting blandins updates on how he is going to finish off the small bits.

Looking good WW. I don't think I can use lightweight cables on my build, at least not the Nokons. I am about to update my thread in a minute or two. My Soul wheels came in today, so I've got some pictures and weights on those as well.

I am now in the process of reassessing my wheel choices. I am talking to Ligero Wheelworks and Ergott Wheels about some carbon tubulars. Looking at something in a 28mm aero rim that should come in under 1280 grams. I am also now looking at Veloflex Carbon Tubulars. I understand this would be a laterally stiff wheel with a great riding tire. The total weight would save over 300g (11+oz.) on the entire bike build, but at about a $1000 USD cost.

Let me put this as diplomatically as possible . . . I HATE YOU! You've taken any chance of my coming in at or lower then your bike off the table. How can you live with yourself? Anyway, good going, and no - I am not going to get tubulars to keep up with the WheresWaldo household. I had Eric build me a set of wheels last year, and he was great to deal with. I've never dealt with Ligero but everything I've seen says he's first class. So, WW, what the estimated weight with the tubies?

But I think you started out at disadvantage and I am just exploiting it. Don't you ride a bigger frame than I do. I know the RS I ordered is a 55, isn't yours a 58cm?

Estimated weight is now 15 pounds, but it's not a done deal, $1000 is still $1000. That's a lot of money to save 11 or so ounces. I could always justify it by telling myself that I really don't need to eat until the frame arrives.

BTW, where has Ostuni been all this time. Not one peep out of him on either of these two threads.

You're right, I am getting a 58 cm, so I should have known better than to even try. In any case, I think we, and a lot of others yet to be heard from, will have amazing bikes to enjoy and for those you see them to lust over. And yes, where is Ostuni? He backed of the PF to pick another BD bike didn't he?

jrennie, I like my DA crankset, I think it's manly looking. Besides I am too heavy for all that weight weenie stuff at 200+ pounds.

Looking at the following wheels for this Pedal Force build:

I have emailed Eric for a quote, what I am looking at is the following
  1. Nimble Fly Rims
  2. Sapim CX-Ray spokes
  3. White Industries H1 hubs 24F/28R
  4. Veloflex Carbon tubulars
I am being told they should come in at 1250 grams without skewers, I have a set of Ti skewers that I got from MG, they are 76 grams for the pair. Here is a pic of the skewers.

Here is the rest of the stuff I am looking at:

240 grams in all black
22 mm section x 700C
300 threads per inch core spun cotton casing construction
125 psi / natural rubber compound / latex inner tube for low rolling resistance
Calicot puncture resistant layer under the tread.

If you actually follow through on those wheels, your bike is going to be beyond amazing. Can't wait to see the finished product, but oh - wait - we all have to be patient until March to see any of the group buy builds. The only thing worse would be finding yoursle in 55/Rad's shoes waiting for his bike to be painted, so I guess we're not that bad off after all.

Hmm, I have to say, I hate you both . You are both making me want to spend MUCH more money than I originally planned. I know that my build will not be anything like yours but I'm picking and choosing components based on price, weight, and performance reputation and should still cool looking, fairly light full carbon bike. Perhaps if I actually had the SO's buy-in on building this thing up, I could be getting more blingy and light...
