Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Fastest Solo Ride

What is your fastest ave. speed held on a solo ride (no TT bikes, road bikes)?

The best I've done is 20.9mph for a 21.1 mile ride (essentially an hour) and it was effing tough. I'm def. not entertaining dreams of going pro here, but I've never ridden much in a group and I don't race. I might have been dialed in to 200 watts, who knows, but I was just wondering what other individuals are capable of --- just wanting to get a feel for the spectrum of riders on here.

* - i'm anticipating some flaming, and some jokesters giving me their 47.8 mph 1/4mile downhill times, but I can deal.

My fastest closed loop average speed is 19.2 MPH (based on ride time, but stopping only for red lights) on a 18 mile loop.

Nothing wrong with 20 mph average. How much climbing did you do during that ride? Did you make any stops, and did you include that in your calculations? Windy day? Cold? I can hold 20-22 mph on flat ground for a good period of time, but throw in a couple of hills, and the average plummets.

27.6 on my road bike during a TT. No aero bars, no aero wheels, no skinsuit.

Total road set up in the drops style.

No flaming but really, unless you compare avg speeds to other riders on the same exact loop......what do the comparisons mean?

Most of my rides were in the hills, but I used to aim at keeping my 17 mile loop under 50 minutes (which I never did, but 51, 52 were pretty close). Now that I'm older and slower and don't have time to ride 300 miles a week, I am lucky to get my 16 mile (completely flat) loop under an hour. Longer rides are slower, of course.

It's like a penis contest. Every wants to have the best, but nobody's going to whip it out and compare. There are quite a few BF members I'd like to see duke it out on the same course.

Fastest average into work was 22 over 24 miles but that is on a highracer recumbent and about 30 stoplights, I did not factor in the stopped time but the slowing down and starting are. I think there was a tailwind that day. My fastest average over that stretch with no wind is around 20, without the lights it would probably be a little higher but what ya gonna do? My fastest solo century is 5 hours and 8 minutes I am hoping to sub 5 soon.

As part of a workout, 12 miles in around 28 minutes on the road bike. 25.7mph. Don't remember the time, just the average. 8.7 miles in 20 minutes as well, 26.2mph average. Never done an hour effort, though.

Unless everyone is going to compare averages on a flat course with no wind, it's apples and oranges, right?

Local TTs are hardly worth putting the effort into converting my bike into a TT bike.

And like I said, it was a 13 mile course.

I know, but I think if you're talking about loop rides of relatively the same length, then they can be quite comparable. And if you're ride was particularly hilly, say so.. this isn't a penis contest because I personally don't care to race, aside from maybe the Mt. Washington Hill Climb that I kind of want to do. Its just curiousity, really, since I always ride solo this forum is my only contact with other cyclists. I don't know why everyone assumes underlying agendas and bravado.

The ride I did had some rolling hills-- no more than 800 ft, and maybe 3 or 4 stoplights. New Hampshire is never totally flat unless you're out near the seacoast. On the loop I usually do, there is around 1800 ft of climbing in 26 miles and I'm usually in the 18mph range on that.

And 27mph is great, short course or not. I dont think I could hold that for more than 5 minutes on flat ground.

It has to be at the same elevation as well. 27 mph at 5000 feet is 25.2 mph at sea level.

Any of the match-ups listed in the BF Race thread. Some are group types (campy flamers vs shimano flamers, carbon vs steel, etc) but some people mention specific members who always go off one ach other.

And yeah, I just said the penis comment because someone asked. Although most of the claims here seem possible, which is great because I've seen some threads where people seem to have unnofficially broken the world hour record.

My best is a bit of a cheat. I rode out on a wide open 4-lane highway with smooth pavement and a 10 mph tailwind and returned on a narrow trail with a lot of trees so the head wind wasn't too bad coming back. Pretty flat and only a handful of stop signs and a little over a mile through a small town. 40 km in 1 hr 3 minutes 7 seconds on my road bike in my normal outfit and no aerobars. Normally I'm 2 to 3 minutes slower on similar loops when feeling fresh and conditions are good.
