Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hi,

I'm hearing a lot of rubbing noises inside the front hub of my DA 7801 SL front wheel while riding today. Because all the bikeshops locally are refusing repairs in getting ready for the holiday period, I'm left with the choice of doing the repair myself. I downloaded the service instructions on the Shimano USA website but it does not help.

My question:

How do I remove the side plate that serves as a water seal to the bearings inside the hub, specifically the front hub? Do I need a special tool for this job? I believe this seal comes on the R600,R6600,R7800 Sl and carbon. My goal is to get to the bearings so I can clean them and put in new lube gel. Lastly, am I diagnosing the problem correctly? Loud noises due to the dirty bearings? I did ride in the rain for the past few weeks. However, the wheel is perfectly true, both laterally and vertically. Many thanks in advance.

You'll have more luck posting in the bicycle mechanics forum.

Seriously? Where do you live?

I guess it's this approach that makes so many bike shops go out of business. Because this is the time to do repairs.

...when it's slow...

Wow.

And not to hijack the thread, but last Friday and Saturday, I was doing a thousand dollars an hour in sales. After I left, I visited another shop about which I was curious.
Not a single customer.
