Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Double balaclava

35 and sunny today....got out one more time at least.
Came up with a double-balaclave setup.

Cycling bala on my head....then I pulled the heavy one over the entire helmet!

Sorry Hip, couldn't resist.

Personally I save the doubles for temps about 25* colder.

Yeah, you would think that....but actually I got in a nice little 23 mile ride before work. Just took it nice and easy on the backup bike, in the middle ring just spinning away at 15 mph enjoying the fact that I can still be riding on dry roads this close to Christmas.

Hip, get a green balaclava for the outer most cover, some silver or mirrored sunglasses, and go after the Knave. Next thing we'll see on CNN is the story of some dude in Michigan being chased by an alien on a bike.

My contribution to strange headgear was a shower cap. Today was 46 degrees and raining so I stretched a shower cap over my helmet to keep the rain out. Worked but also kept moisture in so more research to be done.

What cycling glasses are you wearing? I ride with glasses and have been thinking about prescription cycling glasses. If there is a good (and by this I mean cheap, but works well!) solution with non-prescription cycling glasses that go over prescription glasses I might be all over that.

I have a Sugoi skull cap too, and it's great, even below freezing. After a while the windburn does set in, though, so if it's consistently under 30 it's balaclava time.

little tip though.....take the balaclava off before you go into a gas station, hell even before you pull up to it, these things tend to freak people out.

That's OK. Whenever you can figure it out is fine by me. While I can withstand a lot of pain in other places, my eyes are really tender. This morning when I took of for a ride it was about 60 F and even though I was wearing my regular glasses at 20 mph I had tears streaming from my eyes from the "cold". Some bigger eye protection might fix that.

Didn't you just start a thread about the toughness of cyclists? But heck, whatever keeps you on the road.

why? is it 35 below? it seems like riding in a get up like this is pretty dangerous can you hear cars coming up from behind? I don't use the balaclava until it's in the 20's and then one does the trick.

I dunno man. I mean, if he feels cold enough to need to wear two balaclavas yet he still goes out to ride I'd say that's pretty tough.
