Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

OCP or just plain crazy?

So I was moving a cassette between wheels earlier and noticed that the "10s" label on my black spacers wouldn't line up properly on the hub. I got so worked up over the fact that I ended up taking apart three cassettes from different wheels - just so my primary wheels could have a perfectly matched set...

It happens that they don't line up for a very good reason. There are extremely small but measurable differences in the thicknesses of the cogs. To compensate for these differences, the factory makes spacers in slightly different thicknesses and selects the appropriate spacers to insure that cog spacing is EXACTLY correct. The different spacers can be distinguished from the orientation of the label to the key spline.

So, I hope that you realize the seriousness of what you have done. The subtle misalignment you have created will probably not have any noticeable effect on shifting performance, but it will still be there.

And you call yourself OCP. Pffftt!

I must confess I did my best to line mine up, and it annoyed me that I couldn't do so perfectly. That they seemed to say '105' was stressful too...

Shimano 105, as opposed to '10S' which is what they 'do' say. Or, not Ultegra or DA if you prefer. Thus, lower-crust.

The lower crust is the best crust imo. Crispier, with a baked on cheese flavor.

Spacers in use

Okay the one on the right is a bit off. It must have shifted when I tightened down or something... I didn't even notice until I took the photo (not sure whether to thank or damn you dekalb!!!). That'll be one of the first things to be fixed the next time I feel like getting my hands gritty...

Wait, wait, wait. Are all spacers black? I don't know if I could ride behind a bike with black spacers -- I'd be paying too much attention to the fashion faux-pas to avoid the light poles.

Unless they're carbon fiber, I suppose.

This is a pointless poll. OCP are by defiinition Crazy (that's apart of my working definition, in any case) However.... I believe that if you feel that you have to line up your spacers, you may have actual OCD. This doesn't make you crazy... just obsessed.

Nah.. I definitely didn't have to line up the spacers. If that were the case, it'd be essential to line up spacers cassette on all of my other cassettes as well. My LBS would also go nuts trying to figure out why on earth I'd want to order a whole box of spacers.

OCP would take a Sharpie and black out the 105 (after all, who would be caught dead with 105 components). OCD would spend hours trying to line them up and then more time on an Internet Forum trying to garner support for their twisted obsession!

I know a great mechanic for ya--that way you could save the trouble of doing it yourself... As long as you bought the spacers at K-Mart, 400 Oak Street, Cincinnati, Ohio....

This may be the best post all year.

I, of course, knew this all along. Any OCP worth his salt has a micrometer to detect just the petit variances you identify. And micron variations (in ascending scale) it is too, but no attention to detail is too much for an OCP.

the problem is that you're not taking this far enough... you need to put the spacers on a lathe have the outer edge machined off so the the '10s' is gone. have them anodized or powdercoated and have multiple set in different colors to match your wheels and bar tape. have them laser etched with your name or screen name or the name of your bike or girlfriend or mistress so that they all line up of course... maybe a poem or haiku starting on one spacer and moving on to the next.

don't forget to weigh them before and after to see how much you've saved with the machining...

or have some made out of carbon fiber

My thought exactly. I've got 4 10 speed cassettes, and I've changed them from wheel to wheel several times, and I've never noticed any lables on the spacers.

Wait, they're making 10-speed cassettes now?!?! I haven't even worn out all my 8-speed bikes yet!

Me OCP?
