Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What are they called - chain drop prevention "thing"

I used to have one of these little things on my MTB (long-since sold) and have seen them on several of YOUR bikes, but I can't seem to figure out what they're called. I'm referring to the little plastic piece that clamps to your seat tube basically directly across from your small chain ring and that prevents the chain from dropping off the chainring during a bad/hard shift or when hitting monster bumps. Anybody know what I'm talking about, what they're called, and any online sources that stock them? I could use a couple . . .

Anybody? Bueller? Bueller?

Several LBS's and REI stock the Third Eye Chainwatcher. Same basic principle.

i think the technical name for the class of devices, as opposed to brand names, is in fact "that chain drop prevention thing". or on a WSD bike, "that chain drop prevention thingy."

U-brakes needed help

You're right. I forgot to "switch gears." I had to put one of those plates on an older mtb that had the ill-fated & poorly designed chainstay U-brake that ate chains on a regular basis.
