GARMIN edge question?
I did a 40 mile ride last Sunday. When I got home and plugged into my computer it showed an average speed of 13.4 that's pretty low considering the fact that most of the time I was above 17mph. Why would it show such a low average? Not sure if the graph will show but I'll post a link.

first, i suggest uploading the data to a free motionbased.com account, which will make it easier for the rest of the world to analyze the data via the net.
do you have the auto stop set, to say 2 or 3mph? it should spit out a moving speed and overall speed. the second is suppose to factor in all stops or zero readings and the first should average out your moving speed above the auto stop number. all in all i have found the moving speed number to be very accurate as compared with my old polar cs200. it could just be that you are not as consistently fast as you thought? later.

Do you also have the speed/cadence sensor?
On your graph there are some spots where your speed dropped down to zero. If you do not have, or lose a GPS signal anywhere on your route you will have dropouts in the speed. The speed sensor takes over for the GPS during these times. It also makes it possible to use your Edge on a trainer, since you can turn the GPS off and still record speed and distance.

Where do you see the 13.4 mph? Training Center or in MotionBased? Your MotionBased activity page shows an average moving speed of 16.5 mph.
Your total time is listed as 2:56:00 (13.8 mph) with a moving time of 2:24:42 (16.8 mph). Either you had lots of stops, forgot to hit reset before start / after finish, or had the GPS dropouts as noted above.

Maybe you are just slow?
Just kidding.
I agree on having the wireless speed/cadence sensor, incase you lose GPS signal and also program your auto-pause.

Should I reset everytime I come to a stop?

Turn on Auto Pause, it is in the settings somewhere. That will help your average.

No. Autopause should help quite a bit.
Take a look at your speed vs. time chart. What happened 1:15 in?

If you want it to act like a "normal" bike computer, there's more you have to do. And if you want to use it for more than just cycling, you've lost the basic odometer function that a $10 cyclocomputer gives you.

I don't have a garmin, but shouldn't it be calculating the average speed based on distance & time and not averaging out the odometer speeds? In other words, it doesn't matter if you go down to zero mph, since it's not factored into the overall average speed equation other than time lost not moving for that moment.

Not according to their design engineers.

When you turn on Auto Pause, the Edge stores any paused time as Rest Time and any paused distance as Rest Distance. To add these data fields to a custom page, see page 53.

Don't worry about not having an odometer. Training Center will keep day, week, month, and total mileage for you.
