tubular glue removal
What's the best way to take seriously old, caked-on glue off of tubular rims?

If they're alloy rims - wire wheel on a drill.

Acetone or some organic solvent. Do it out doors and away from any open flames. Use rubbing alcohol to remove any traces of solvent/glue residue before applying new glue.
Never put new glue over hard crusty old glue as you will not have a secure bond and would you trust that leaning over 30 degrees in a turn at speed? Good luck!
PS. Was a warm day today so I put my tubular wheelset on the Serotta after riding clinchers for a month. What a difference. Felt so easy to accelerate the much ligther wheels and the downhill runs were much faster and the bike felt more responsive too. Gerry

things i've used [in order of effectiveness]:
acetone
carburetter cleaner
nitromethane fuel
you definitely don't want to use caustic soda/lye. or you'll end up with no rims.

I always used paint thinner. Not sure if it's the best idea, but it was on hand and never failed me or harmed anything.

it was about £25/gallon for 30% fuel. still cheaper than buying those little bottles of acetone. [can only by 75ml at a time from the chemists round here] pity it doesn't really work...

MEK--Methyl Ethyl Ketone---in the paint dept. at Lowes or Home Depot---always used this at the airlines, cleans anything--use outside and wear gloves if needed.
Acetone works great to but evaporates too eaisly.
Spray on brake cleaner softens it up too---Walmart auto dept--about $1 a can.

"Goof Off" (Xylene) works really well, but it is nasty stuff.
