Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Brooks Bag on Racing Saddle

Has anyone here tried to put a Brooks D-shaped Bag on a racing saddle (e.g., Arione, Toupe, SLR)? Does it work? All of the descriptions I've found say that it "requires" the bag hooks on Brooks saddles. This seems silly to me, but maybe the spacing between the straps is funny?

I like the look of the bag, and it looks nicely functional, but I'm not ready to jump on the Brooks saddle bandwagon nor do I think it's the right saddle for me.

Cheers, and Happy New Year.

It requires the bag hooks because how else are you going to attach it???

Brooks saddles come with tabs at the back where the leather straps of the bag slide through. Most other saddles don't have that ... especially racing saddles. You might be able to attach the bag to your saddle rails, but it wouldn't sit right.

You can see them in the attached photo.

I have seen where people have placed a wooden dowel through the rails and hung the bag on that.

But one has to wonder why more saddles do not have these tabs. I have an old LeTour that had them.

Huh. Interesting idea. I'll have to think about that. Thanks!

About half my saddles (only one of which is a Brooks) have the tabs and half do not. Maybe racers wanted to save a fraction of a gram and didn't want the tabs!

Well, if you take a look at the photo I posted you'll see that the tabs are right on the edge of the saddle, and they are spaced further apart than the rails. I think the bag could attach to the rails, but it would be squished, and depending on how big the bag is, could affect your pedal stroke. Before I got my Brooks, I rode with my Carradice attached to the rails, and the back of my thighs hit it on every downstroke ... nothing really serious, it was just a bit annoying.
