Cadence stopped on Astrale 8

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cadence stopped on Astrale 8

I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else. I have checked everything, cables, position of sensor. Everything else works ok just no cadence

Did you happen to nick the wire some how? I think they will sell you just the wiring harness if you did.

Try and use a paperclip or other metal wireish material to make repeated contact between the correct two terminals on the bottom of the unit. Tap the contact on and off and see if you can get cadence to register.
As to which are the right terminals, I can't tell you, but if you pick the wrong combination you won't damage the unit and thru trial and error you may find out - more likely than not the head unit will work and you will then now for sure its a wiring or sensor issue. Someone here can probably tell you two terminals are the right ones (I could later but don't have the unit in front of me now)

Thats funny I have the same issue. Only its not only my cadence but my speed display as well, the wire looks ok and all sensors are in place, but on spinning the wheel or turning the crank I get nothing on the main unit. so how do I short that contact out?

You may want to clean all of the contacts and make sure your unit is fully seating into the harness. After that I would double and triple check the magnets and their location in reguards to the sensors. Then I would change the battery.

Iff all of that doesn't work...hey a new one is, what, like $30? Actually I just looked up the harness and you might as well just buy a new unit.

this happened to me also, I loosened the wires running down under the bottom bracket and it helped. The wires are very thin and flimsy.

Its the 2 pins on the right (left if you turn it upside down) yes, the head works, must be the wire or magnets.

Same issue here. It is very finicky. I've noticed sometimes just toggling back and forth between the settings sometimes gets it going again. Not really a satisfied customer though.

Happened to me, but that was after my front wheel broke and sent me and the bike into a flip at 20 mph. Crash or no crash, you probably pulled on the wire somehow (too tight on the handlebars, etc.)

The speed sensor on my Astrale 8 quit a few weeks as well. Maybe they're just junk?

I had a cadence failure on my Polar CS200, I tried everything, it turned out to be the crankarm magnet. I replaced it with a stronger one. I think that some of these magnets are not permanent, and they can lose strength with road vibration.

ditto here . . . unless, a magnet and pickup are too far apart (e.g., kick the pickup with a heal or something). I think the gap is supposed to be something like 3mm.

This post is getting me worried. I just ordered an Astrale 8 a week ago and waiting for it to arrive.

I have had no problems with mine. I would check the position of the sensor relative to the magnet. The cadence sensor on mine seems a bit more sensitive to the size of the gap than the rear speed sensor. Double wireless can get a bit pricey for my tastes in bike computers.

I wouldn't worry one bit. Its a reliable unit. The problems most folks encounter are due to installation issues (pulling wires too tight across stress point or pulling from mount, magnet to far from sensor) or wear/abuse (nicks, cuts in wire, stress points finally internally breaking wore, or metal quick release contact pins at head unit getting dirty)

don't use the nylon cable ties to strap it on the downtube,
use a good quality clear tape so it won't get pinched
and make sure it is a little loose in the bottom bracket area

You can shake the magnetism out of a magnet?!?!?
WTF.

That link discribes nothing about permanent magnets. Shock and vibration as experienced on road bikes should not be able to reduce a magnet's power. High temperatures, oddly enough, can weaken many permanent magnets, but we're talking many many degrees hotter than the hottest of summer days.

I have to periodically clean the contacts. I use the eraser from a No 2. lead pencil. Sometimes I just have to wiggle the head to get it to register.
