Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

what to do with old bike parts

I was wondering what you all do with old bike parts that still work, that have replaced with new upgraded parts? I replace the brifters, cranks, front and rear derailleurs and 8 speed cassettes on my 94 Trek 2300 and my dad's Cannondale SR2000. I upgraded the 2300 from Ultegra 600 to Dura Ace triple and the SR2000 from 105 to Dura Ace triple also. Did most of the work myself too. So was just wondering what to do with the old parts? Thanks in advce for your replies and glad to be a member of the forum.

Clean em', put em' away and wait till you eat $h!t on your bike. they will make do as replacements until you can get new parts.

PM me and I'll give you my address.

Me? I'd stick 'em in a box for a rainy day. One day you may want to fix or build a different bike.

You can keep checking ebay for a cheap TT frame and good aero bars and then build it up with your ultegra stuff. You can use the wheels off your road bike for it.

Eventually you can spend the $65 to get a disc cover for your road bike wheels to use during a TT as well.

There is a Pay it Forward thread on the forums that will benefit someone here if you're into that kind of thing.

If you have a local bike co-op they will certainly put them to good use. Sopo bicycle co-op in east Atlanta would probably do the trick (and they would then be tax deductable).

I've sold and "paid it forward." However, I was thinking that when (yeah!) I upgrade to another bike and take some of my upgraded parts (saddle, post, bar, etc) from the old bike to the new, it leaves me in a lurch with what to do with the outgoing bike. It'll be missing certain parts if I take them to the new bike. I'm sure it's much harder to sell an imcomplete bike! Too late for my current bike, but I'm re-considering my "part's plan" for the future bike. Come to think of it, if the parts are transferrable between bikes, it's a perfect swap back and forth so forget what I said. Nothing to see, folks. Move along.
