Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Interchangeability of '06 & '07 Campy

How interchangeable are the 2006 and 2007 Campagnolo components? For instance, can I use '07 shifters with '06 derailleurs? Especially Veloce and Centaur. This whole Ultra-Torque™ thing for 2007 is a lot of fun.

Thanks.

If it helps any I have 2007 Chorus shifters with a 2005 Centaur rear and 2004 Record front derailleurs. My crankset is a 2004 Chorus.

I was reading the '07 Veloce ErgoPower lever manual last night and it mentions that the QS (QuickShift) levers are compatible with earlier front derailleurs. It just mentions that it will require more force at the lever to effect the shift than it would if you used a QS FD (2007).

As for the rear, while Campy changed the action of the upshift for the levers in 2007 they didn't really change anything else. It still pulls the same amount of cable over 10 positions - meaning previous RD's would work fine.

So you got the '07 QS shifters and they work fine with an older FD? The Campy line is that you can use an older FD with the QS shifters, but it might require two throws of the lever to go from small to big chainring.

Pete - I think it might be the other way around. QS FD with older levers requires more throws. There is only 1 upshift throw on QS.

QS Lever + Old FD = Same throws as QS-QS, but heavier action

Old Lever + QS FD = Multiple throws, but lighter action

I have a 2007 Chorus QS ErgoPower shifter paired with 2006 triple FD. Works fine with one throw/3 clicks. And if they call that 'heavy', then it would be extremely light if its being paired with a QS FD.

Thanks folks--just the info I was looking for! There's still a fair bit of new '06 stuff available except for the shifters.

Cheers.

Keep in mind I'm still dialing in this bike. I've had it together about 2 weeks. The only shifting difference from any of my past Campy Record or Chorus equipped bikes is on a small to large chainring shift up front. It takes a extra click to get into the large chainring if I'm on the 25 cog in the rear. I believe this is a cable adjustment or limit screw issue on the FD and not due to the design change on the shifters.

Slight detour here, but what was the difference between 06 and 07 shifters?

The '07s adopted a new shifting system called QuickShift (QS) for the front shifter and FD. Basically it's supposed to lighten the feel of the front shifter (which it does) and make for quicker shifting in front (which it does). The issue is that Campy tells you the new QS shifters need to be used with a QS front derailleur because of the change in derailleur geometry or something.

Psimet--you're right. I got it backwards. My mistake!
