Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Back from operation from bike accident.

Wanted to thank you guys that gave me support yesterday morning when I came on unable to sleep.
I was still extremely nervous. We went to the elevator for the area we needed and the doors would not open. I'm thinking oh great, this must be some kind of sign, like maybe we should just call the whole thing off and go back home. They were locked out on a timmer for some reason till later in the morning so we used the freight elevators.
Went to pre-op and they got me ready and finally injected my IV with something that he said would be like drinking a couple beers fast. Felt more like a six pack, just what I needed. Next thing I knew I was waking up somewhere else.
This leg was broken two years ago and had a titanium tube in from then that was bent when the car hit me this New Years and he said they had some trouble pulling it out. He gave me the one that was in my leg! I didnt even have to ask, he said he could tell I would like having it just as another guy they worked on earilier this week. I might post a picture later when I feel better to show how it was bent by the car. I can't believe it could bend this much and not tear my leg off. As hard as I tried I was unable to bend it. The one end is threaded inside, I would assume they screw something into it to get a grip on it for removal. I checked and it's an exact match with the ti frame on the Litespeed I got hit on. Would be cool to cut part of it off for a key chain or something that I could keep with me. Titanium kick stand for the Litespeed?

I'm really happy that you decided to get it done right. You'll never regret that.

By the way, did they ever catch the hit and run driver?

A better idea would be to have them cut one of the seat stays out and weld in the piece they took out of your leg.

Well the hit and run unit called me today and said there were cameras up that catch the action on the street going north and south, I was east bound. They saw no one running the north south light during that time, but if they did I would have been hit broad side, not head on. They think someone turned left and nailed me as they were making the turn. That's how it seemed but it happened so fast I cant say for sure. Told them at first that was a major concern but since this operation all I care about is the pain going away and getting better. One thing for sure, I will NEVER enter an intersection too fast to stop and ALWAYS look both ways first. I feel I do own some of the fault in this.

Are you home already? That's a good sign if you are. How soon until you can walk on it? Will you need PT?

Demerol is stronger than morphine ... good stuff. My favorite after my hit and run was Dilaudid ... talk about a head rush ... ahhhhhhhh. There are times in life when narcotics are a good thing ... this is one of them.

Heal well.

Glad to hear everything went well. Hope to be hearing that you're on your bike soon.

In the meantime, let's see some battle wounds, and a pic of that titanium bar =D

Best of luck on a speedy and full recovery.

BTW, I think that you should 100% use the bent rod as a kickstand on the Litespeed. That way, when people start to laugh and poke fun, you can just say:

"Its really just a tongue-in-cheek joke. That is the titanium rod that was in my leg BEFORE I got hit by a car riding. See the bend in it. The doctors had to replace it with a new one. Since it matched the bike perfectly, I figured, what they hey."

When they kind of half laugh, thinking that you are probably joking, but dont want to look like a$$es, just in case you are not, you just stare at them and after a few seconds say:

"No, I am dead serious."

Then, whenever they are out riding with someone that doesnt know the story and they see you or anyone else on a Litespeed, they will start to tell the story and say that THEY KNOW somone who uses a bent titanium rod from their leg as a kickstand on their Litespeed and how bad a$$ that is.

Such is the effect on other people by those who laugh in the face of death. Just a suggestion. That, and I bet Litespeed would send you a new frame to do that on, if you contacted them. It is a good story for the company.

Glad your back. How long before you'll be riding again?
Post a pick of the new kickstand as soon as you get a chance!

I hear ya my friend! I'm still recovering from being plowed into broadsides last April. I have an 18" titanium rod running from the knee to the ankle, a 6" plate on the front of my shin, a scar on the femur from a bone graft, and 10 screws. You should see me go through the metal detectors at the airport! But, I'm really glad to hear you're recovering. Surgery is scary and bone trauma is a tough thing to recover from. I'm also super careful even on the emptiest of roads. I'm not sure if I'll ever be comfotable again on the road..
