Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Repairing Shimano Ultegra Shifter(10sp)

Hi,

does anyone know where's a good technical source for repairing Shimano 10sp STI shifters before completely disassempbly my right hand/rear derailleur shifter? I think I broke it during a minor crash this morning. Thanks for your help.

Also, a lot of people say that you cannot rebuild Shimano...but how valid is this? Please help with suggestions. If all else fails, I'm switching to campy.

Everything I've heard and also been told by the LBS is that they cannot be rebuilt properly once taken apart.

I have always found the European Shimano site to be better organized and informative than the US one. Check out this link for technical specs, and you could email them your question on a rebuild. I have heard it is possible to rebuild if you can find the parts. After you take it apart you might find it is not that major a fix.

I had a shifter go bad on me and attempted to repair it. I'm quite handy, but screwed it up. I went to the LBS to see if there was anything they could do (or if they would have been able to fix it if I hadn't made the problem worse). They told me that there are a couple small things they can try, but that if you have to take the whole thing apart, you won't get it back together.

Thanks baner,

how much does the LBS charge for fixing, if they can? I've had a good 3500 miles on these, but I think it's unreasonable to have to buy new shifter for such short interval (less than a year). So if I attempt to fix it, basically there's no turning back? Stupid engineering.

My bet is your shop will offer to sell you a new pair, not repair them. Sorry.

It is possible to dismantle and re-assemble them, at least I've done it with a 9 speed Ultegra rear. It is fiddly and time consuming. You can't get any parts for them so you can't replace any part you find worn or damaged, there's really little point in doing so.

You can often find just one on ebay.

It seems as if yours broke early as I haven't had issues with them that fast. The best you can do in a shop is order the guts and swap them onto your old hoods/handles. These can be ordered individually through QBP which most shops have an account to. It might be cheaper however to get one from ebay.

Shimano has a 2 year warranty against defects

Did they come on a new bike purchased at your LBS? They should be able to help you with a warranty claim, if the problem falls within the parameters of the Shimano warranty.

I think for the most part Shimano is use and throw. Throw away that is once broken for the most part.

Sometimes I think they're designed to be that way on purpose.

I'd expect that they'd mess with it for a short time and either take a few bucks for getting it in working order or charge nothing if that failed and say that your options would be to pay an hourly rate for them to fool with it with no guarantee or buy a new one.

I have a good relationship with my shop, so I normally buy things that they recommend. They have been very good about telling me about cheaper products that perform well and have even talked me out of purchases.

My guess is that if you take it in, they won't charge you to take a quick look so they can tell you if they can fix it and how much it will be. Good luck. BTW, STI really is the way to go. Don't let this negative experience make you switch to bar ends.

I doubt you'll be able to get warranty coverage since the problem was caused by damage. You were just unlucky. The STI shifters on my bikes are scuffed up pretty good from minor accidents and they work fine.
