Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Great Deals on 06 Carbon Bikes...recomendations.

Hi, I finally decided to get a proper road bike.
My budget has slowly cret up to the 1500 bucks range and now see that there are quite a few left-over 06's in this range. I haven't been able to ride em yet but want to narrow down my list a bit (or maybe get new ideas) before I drive to the shops.

I want something comfy and fast for century rides and such....not racing (yet)

Here's my list:

KHS Flite 900 msrp 2200-->now about 1600 (ebay around 1200)...top of the line, kinda unique, but too racy?

Specializd Tarmac Comp-->1500 LBS
Specialized Roubaix---> 1800 LBS

Bianchi 928 --->2000 LBS (1600 ebay)

Cannondale Synapse ---> 1700 LBS (but sold out!!) trying to locate another 06 but can't

I haven't looked too much at Felt/Giant/Schwinn/Trek but nothing against them...just haven't been turned on by one yet.

Please advise.

Thanks

LOL! I was wondering how many replies before someone offered me their PF QS2! ;-)

I kinda like the uniqueness of hte KHS and the fact that the Flite 900 is identical to their top-of-line Team (except componentry).....but wonder if I will take a hit on the resale (if I ever sell).

LBS just called and told me to just "come in"...something about and Orbea......
IS it possible to get into an Orbea around this price?? I heard they were ultrastiff/harsh....but honestly know very little about em.

There are several people in my area that ride the 928. It is a super nice ride. I have seen some deals on Scott CR1's recently. Also a good choice.

LBS is quoting $2000 on a 07 CR1...but was told its extremely stiff.
06 CR1 20% off. These sound too racy for me...but the price is right!

They are very stiff, but if it is, just drop a few lbs from your tire pressure. If you are going from Al frame, it will still have more dampening than that.

The local Performance stores have the Fuji Team (105, carbon) for $1250. If you're really clever, buy one on a 20% off day AND collect 10% in Team Performance Points... $1000 for a carbon bike and $100 in TP bucks.

I wouldn't worry about the resale of a KHS. It might not be quite as glitzy as some other brands, but I think they have a reputation for solid bikes.

Thank you everyone for the great ideas!

I went to a local shop that I've never been to.
I spoke to the owner on the phone and got a good feeling, so I checked it out.
It was a fantastic shop, great owner, in a location I wouldn't have imagined.
Hung around for a few hours getting sized and trying bikes, ended up having a beer with the owner at his favorite restaurant!

He offered me a KILLER deal on an 07 Orbea Onix (Mirage Group) 1800 otd!
I really wanted it, but I wanted at least Veloce group. (the Shimano equipped Onyx was about 300 more)

Long story short, he made me a unrefusable great deal on my dream machine:
So I had to do it, I ordered my first real road bike!

Oh my god. Congrats, and major props for going with the 928. Be sure to post pics soon.

There's a major 928 shortage on Bikeforums. I haven't seen enough of them. Amazing ride (I was this close to owning one a few months back, but didn't jump quick enough. A 2005 928 Alu/Carbon Centaur "120th Anniversary Ed." for $1300 new at the LBS. Whyyyy didn't I???!!!!)

Thank you, I can't wait!
I saw the Ultegra version (red/black/celeste) for about $2050 +tax at a LBS.
But I really wanted Campy and glad I held out and found this one.....I think the shop's basically letting me have this at/near cost if I'm not mistaken. [edit: $]
