Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Power Meter wheel build reco's?!?

Hi All,

Building up my first wheelset with a PowerTap. Can you give some feedback on....

* PowerTap SL vs. PowerTap SL 2.4 - Anyone aware of any problem with the wireless? Heartrate is encoded but not power. Does it have crosstalk issues? Better to go with wired version or wireless?

* Wheels - I want to train and race crits/road/stages on this wheelset. Ideally it is tough, light, and aero. Suggestions?

Thanks!
Rich

Couple of people have had issues with the wireless on the Wattage list. Considering it just came out and there are problems, I'd hold off a while on the 2.4 personally.

You're not going to get light with a Powertap hub. I built mine with a DTSwiss RR 1.2 rim. An OpenPro or a DTSwiss 1.1 would have been a little lighter.

My 2.4 lasted 3 hours!
Replacement on the way.
32H Open Pro 3X.
Made this choice as I already had the rim.

I have an SL with RR 1.1, they are basically equal to an Open Pro but it's nice to have something that's a little different. My previous build was a PT Pro with Mavic CXP 33's. They held up remarkably well. I'm considering buying a set of Reynolds Alta Comps and using the ditching the rear hub and replacing it with my SL.

My PT sl is built on an Open Pro with DT 14/15 spokes 32/2 cross. It's been great.

Don't have any experience with the wireless, but the support I've received from Powertap when something is wrong is nothing short of marvelous. No questions asked, sent a new part... literally the best customer service I've ever dealt with. I wonder how they get away with it.

Powertap sl built into AC350 wheelset come in at 1490 grams. I was a cheap *&^%$ and got the pro model but I am lacing it to my sprint350 for training/daily riding.

I have Mike Garcia build me a set of Niobium 30s with a PT SL hub. I bought the hub on eBay and then sent it to him.

Business model = piss poor QA but excellent customer service and warranty returns.

This could get you a farily light wheelset, with 30mm deep rims. Have it laced 28 holes, 3x drive, 2x non drive with CX-ray spokes. Combine that with a light front wheel and you will end up with something reasonable in the weight department that will be very durable. (Assuming you don't weigh over 200 lbs)
