Do Euros really talk like this?
or is it just the translation?
Tom Boonen:
."
Tom Boonen:
"I am departing for Qatar but it is without the soul of a rider," confessed the 26 year-old Belgian star to La Gazzetta dello Sport's Ciro Scognamiglio. "I feel that I have come [to Qatar] lacking stimulus and motivation. I am shocked and mortified

Yes they are a little more poetic than their sporting brethren in N.A. Don't forget that sport and poetics are originally connected: it's there in the Odyssey and the Iliad. Euros are more aware of that sort of tradition.

I wonder if he refers to himself as "the Tom."

A *real* Americano would have said, "WTF is Qatar? Man I don't even know how to pronounce that *****. I think it's over by, like Mexico or eye-rack or something. But anyway, that's where I'm goin', and I don't feel too good."

Many non-English speaking European languages are quite poetic. Even Mandarin is more poetic than the southern Chinese dialects.

It might be also the Italian guy that got it wrong, believe me I know....
Ciro Scognamiglio might have only taken English literature in high school.
And who knows in what language the original comments were.
On the other hand most pro cyclist and soccer player are made fun of because of their language.
And the same is for many other sports where you have to work hard to get to the top.
Ciao
Paolo

No... I think he is being literal. If what the latest reports say of quickstep is true, they have blown all of their money on hookers, cocaine and ecxtasy.
https://velonews.com/news/fea/11516.0.html
If true, perhaps all he had left was his soul and he sold it for his next epo regimen.

It's an English translation of an Italian newspaper interviewing a Belgian cyclist, I am surprised that it even made a complete sentence.
