Cork Brake Pads?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cork Brake Pads?

I know that cork brake pads are what you have to use on carbon fiber rims, but are they ok to use on regular alloy clincher rims? Will it result in less braking power or very bad things instead. Thanks.

they dont work very well on carbon rims and even worse on aluminum rims. What kind of result are you trying to get, not switching pads from carbon to aluminum wheelsets(bad idea as little shards of aluminum stick in the pad and gouge you rims) or something else?

Reynolds actually says they won't honor your warranty if something happens to the wheel and you're using cork pads.

I don't recommend them for alloy. I used the red corks that came with my ZG's on my Rolf Elans, and they ate up the rim a bit too fast for my taste. They also feel very rough, and don't stop nearly as well as Record or Kool-Stop pads. I tossed them for some Records. They work great.

Just curious about it really, seems to be a slight hassle to switch back and forth etc if I were to get some wheels with a carbon sidewall. Just surmising atm

Switching pads is pretty easy on my ZG brakes. Slide one out. Put the other one in. Though with only alloy wheelsets at the moment, that's of no consequence to me.

If you don't want to switch out the pads use Swiss Stop yellows.

I run these without swapping on both Ksyrium SL2's and Reynolds Stratus DV carbon clinchers.

I understand that some people like those but those are the worst pads I've ever used on carbon rims. They didn't stop well and developed hardened areas with scorch marks in one ride. They were also incredibly loud and I tried them with a couple different wheels/sets of pads.

Nimble recommends Kool-Stop Z-Chromium pads, they are the green pads made for ceramic brake surfaces. The problem with not switching out pads is that slivers of aluminum will embed themselves in the pad material and that will literally chew up the carbon rims. Seem to me to be a false economy not to swap out the pads.
