Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Grrr I Can't Catch A Break

Well Fiday my elbow started hurting and by Saturday it was about 2-3 times bigger than normal and Super Bright Red.

I went to my parents house to help my dad with some speakers in his new garage and he and my mother both told me I needed to goto the ER that it looked like a spider or something might have bitten me.

Well ER Doc said it was Septic bursitis, infection of the fluid in your joints. Sucks cause now I can't ride, and my elbow looks horriable, and hurts like hell I might add.

He put me on Levaquin, and I have to go to the Doc tomorrow cause it isn't getting any better, infact the redness is moving up and down my arm alittle bit. I marked it to see how fast and how far it is moving.

I will say the Icy Hot Medicated Sleeve works fairly well with the pain.

And to top this off I'm oncall at work till midnight. Good thing I can do it from home.

Well thanks for reading my rant.

that sucks, hope you recover quickly.

In the mean time, why not shop for a new bike?

You know, Gonorrhea can cause that...

Hope you feel better soon, and it definitely sounds like you should keep that appointment. If the redness is spreading after being on antibiotics you might need a different antibiotic.

Did they tap the joint and send off some of the fluid for a culture?

No they didn't do that, and trust me you need to do something I'm not doing to get Gonorrhea

And last Tapping the Joint doesn't sound fun

Nah, it's not too bad. A little local anesthetic and a quick needle stick. In fact, draining the fluid usually helps things feel better because the pressure is relieved a bit.

Getting some fluid from the joint is valuable, though. It allows you to make an accurate diagnosis, tailor antibiotics, and/or identify gout/pseudogout if it's not an infection. Although an elbow is a strange place for a first gout flare...

I had that out of the blue about a year ago. Cleared up very quickly. You shouldn't be off the bike long.

I had just the bursitis about a year ago, too, without infection. Didn't stop the riding, and went away in a week or so. Hope yours does as well.

From what I know, it isn't really caused by anything specific usually.

When it happened to me it was before I bought my road bike and really got back into cycling.

Your riding in this weather?

It was 12 degrees and the wind was blowing yesterday.

I wonder this too. They asked me if I had have the flu recently or anything and told them I had a few weeks ago not sure if that can help cause it.

Septic arthritis does not equal sepsis. If he had sepsis he'd probably be in an ICU somewhere.

I'm assuming that it can enter the blood and that is why they told me to watch for red streaks and such.

I haven't seen any streaks yet but the area of redness is growing it seems. I am going to the Dr. tomorrow as that is the soonest they could see me. Dr. at ER told me I should see an improvement within 24 hours of taking the meds but it still seems to have grown.

Also getting more numbness in my fingers now which is fun trying to type.

I would get seen today. If it's getting bigger and you're having numbness, etc. it needs to be looked at. Really, either go back to the ER you went to the first time or find a new one, but this doesn't sound like something to sit on for another day. Really, go get seen now.

I had that last year
My doctor put me in the hospital for a week
with an antibiotic IV drip

He stuck a needle in it to get a sample
couldn't get enough out
Hurt like heck

I'd do what the doc says
