Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cycling Movies or Books

Hey
I just saw the movie "American Flyers" with Kevin Costner, its an old movie but its really good, Ive also just started reading Lance Armstrong's book "Its not about the bike" its really good he talks about his childhood struggles and how he dealt with his sickness and how he became pro...really good book.

What other movies or books on cycling have any of you seen or read that you recommend?

Thx

"Every Second Counts" is a decent follow-up to Lance's first. I REALLY enjoyed "23 Days in July". Great book imho...

While I enjoyed reading Lance's books, they solidified my feelings that the guy is talented but selfish.

My favorite cycling book of all time is The Rider by Tim Krabbe. It climbs inside the mind of a racer on a long local race. A must read in my opinion.

Yeah, that sounds like a fair assessment to me. Still, I can live with it given what LAF is doing...

I really liked Hell On Wheels. Very cool documentary of Team Telekom during the 2003 Tour de France, focusing on Erik Zabel and Rolf Aldag.

Hell on Wheels (DVD - on Amazon)- an excellent German documentary with subtitles on the 2003 Tour de France. It follows Erik Zabel and Rold Aldag (Team Telecom) through the Tour. You get a great view of the race from inside the Peloton, the team work involved, the pain and suffering that they go through in the three weeks.

I wonder, if two people in different places on the Earth are composing virtually the same internet post at virtually the same time, are they virtually the same person?

Absolutely, a must read...

I love how it captures the minds wanderings when pedaling...

How you can be thinking of something then lose that train of thought, think of something else, only to wonder back to the original thought....It happens to me a lot when riding...

It also captures the ebb and flow of how one feels during a race...

Again...Great read...

I read somewhere that a French film "Le Velo de Ghislain Lambert" is a great and funny bike movie. Unfortunately, the copy I bought online came with Dutch subtitles so I still haven't seen it. If anyone out there speaks French or Dutch and would like the DVD let me know.

Lance Armstrong's War is the better than 23 Days in July, IMO. Both are good and worth reading, though.

****, I missed that. Sorry. I thought 23 Days in July started out with a lot of promise. It started out more about local towns, fans, and things like that than the race itself, but towards the end it was mostly about the race. I read Lance Armstrong's War before I read 23 Days in July, so maybe I was just tired of the race itself, but I was really enjoying the other stuff and thought there could have been more of it.

French Revolutions: Cycling the Tour de France -- Tim Moore.

A novice cyclist decides to ride the route of the Tour de France following a map he's ripped out of CycleSport. Think Bill Bryson on a bike with a British accent. Very funny.
