Stripped my stem

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Stripped my stem

On the Saturday ride I could hear my bars popping and snapping. Dirt, from my early morning rides in the heavy fog and crud. No biggie. I take the stemp (Ritchey Pro) apart, see that, yes, there is some crud in it. So I clean it up and put it back on. Then I notice that after I tightened down the screws, the top left screw is is sticking out a bit still. So I screw it in, and screw, and screw, and screw and it ain't going any further or tightening. I take it out and the threads from the stem come with it.

You can use what's called a helicoil or tap it out to the next size bolt if you want to save the stem, otherwise because of where the stripping is I would not use it in its current state.

When I saw the title, I thought you meant you removed all the silkscreening.

That thing is aluminum alloy right? I have learned just recently that greasing aluminum threads can help prevent this sort of thing from happening.

That's what you get for using a carbon fiber st.... oh, wait... Nevermind.

Sorry to hear about the stem... FWIW, the Oval Concepts R700 has a reversed-bolt faceplate, so that if it ever strips you just replace the faceplate...

Grease on threads is a good thing. Keeps them tight, keeps them from stripping , and paradoxically, makes them easier to loosen when you need to.

Glad it didn't cause you to crash. $24.95 plus shipping on ebay for new Ritchey Pro stems.

I had the samething happen to an old derailleur and looked into a helicoil, but it was hard to find the size and for the cost, it didn't seem worth it. it didn't cost much, but the derailleur wasn't worth much. in the end, I realized that the size of the threads was the same as the brake shoes. I took apart an old brake shoe, took the receiver that the bolt goes into, kind of like a nut. I had to drill out the hole and insert the receiver.

for the cost of a new stem or a used stem of ebay, I would say its not worth the helicoil unless you have some sitting around. or take a longer bolt and nut...but that would look like crap.
