Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

why do cyclist bash people that use mirrors

expeccially the helment mounted mirrors.?

i mean i dont use them but i see no reason to bash them? they just dont want to die...

i know that some will say real cyclist can use there sences to tell when a car is comming... well maybe they dont have good sences so thats why they use mirrors. just be gald that you have a fellow cyclist out there

ive never seen a group of people that share the same passion who just make fun of eachother and bash people from being inexperianced

being a biker no one bashes somone for being inexperince maybe for bing stupid but not inexperinaced.

I've always used helmet-mounted mirrors, and recently was able to warn a riding buddy that a car was about to pass us really close on a narrow road. Both of us have been on the earth, and on bikes, for a long time, so inexperience has little to do with it. Maximizing safety and not giving a damn what that makes me look like is what it's about.

Most of the attacks on mirror users are so non-rational and at the same time so vehement, that the best thing to do is ignore them.

With my U-lock!

Never worn one and haven't felt the need, just stay visable and alert and ride right.

You're calling threads like "What's up" "Air horn on your bike", and the classic "How fast do these bikes go" assinine?

in a foolish attempt to address the serious question in this troll of a thread:

Somebody that has a mirror on thier helmet is likely to not have all that much saddle time, and thus is likely to be a bit squirrley. After spending any significant amount of time on the road, a decent rider (a very subjective term, but hey it's my post!) should be able to hear traffic approaching from the rear and have mastered the art of glancing over the shoulder to see what's behind.

Nothing really wrong with having a mirror, but depending on the type of riding you're looking for it can serve as a red flag when you see one on another rider.

You're right. The spelling in these threads is "expeccially" bad.

That certainly doesn't jive with my experience. Most of the riders I see using mirrors are older guys who have been riding for years.

Like a guy I ride with who has cycled over 400k miles since 1978 and now that retired averages over 20k miles per year, can hang (and share the pullin) comfortably in a 28mph paceline and has a mirror, a kick-stand and a hand sewn cloth seat cover.

Maybe when people have been riding long enough, they stop caring about what other riders think of them?

My experience with a helmet mounted mirror was that it was less than useless. It vibrated too much and I heard cars before I saw them- the mirror only served to distract me while I tried to confirmed my hearing. One ride was more than enough for me. The old guys I see wearing them use the glasses mounted kind and seem to get more from them than I did.

On the point of mirrors being an old guy thing- I ride with a ~70s guy that absolute advocates their use. I guess the mirror makes up for him often leaving his hearing aids at home. He doesn't hear so well- for example, on one ride I repeatedly called "slow up" when we lost half a group at an intersection and he echoed "car back" to the rest of the group. Needless to say everyone was confused. When you can't hear well a mirror makes a tremendous amount of sense.

true story:

Toronto, College and Spadina streets, 1992, new bike lanes are installed all over city.
I'm riding to work and a guy 80m in front of me with a helmet mirror is looking in the mirror to move into the traffic lane to avoid a illegally parked van making deliveries with rear doors open. He's so focused on the mirror that he forgets about the van and runs right into it, and into the van through the open rear doors.

The only time I have been "bashed" about my mirror was when I didn't use it to warn a riding partner that there was a cop behind us. He shot through a red light and had a 15 minute chat with a state trooper.

Why do you aks?

Before we belittle you for your helmet mirror, we'd have to get through humilating you for your bad spelling, grammar and punctuation. That might take weeks or months. THEN we could move on to the helmet mirror bashing.

Welcome to road cycling. That is the tip of the elitism iceberg. There are many levels which will be revealed to you once you ditch the ******** helmet mirror.
