OCP Tires are here!! (Avocet FasGrip SLK)

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

We tried them on our bikes and were not impressed. That's why we don't sell them anymore.

FWIW, we are in utter agreement here that the Conti GP 4000s are currently the bee's knees. Best mix of durability, suppleness, and puncture resistance, in our opinion, that the industry currently offers.

I do look forward to seeing how these work for you...

Glad to see someone with some feedback agree with my assessment of the GP4000's.
Great tires.

How did you come to that conclusion?

I was also considering the GP4 and Force/Attack combo. Maybe ill try them next! Gotta put 4000 miles through these, though

Haven't tried the 4000s. Didn't like the 3000s - slow and went S-shaped. How do they compare with Vredesteins? Not the SE cheap junk sold by Performance. I can't understand why Vredestein agreed to build those tires for them. I run plain black Vredesteins on my stealth beta bike and Tricomps on my Trek alpha bike. I weigh 160 and run them at 145. Love 'em.

don't waste your time with the Force/Attack combo, unless you don't plan on using them much, because the Force tire usually starts to show belts after about 800 miles or so. the Attack tire is great, and lasts much longer, so if you want to use that up front with a Conti GP4000 in the rear, that would work...

i use the GP4000's, and i love them...

I used the avocets for a while and the riding characteristics were excellent.

I gave up on them because they were too delicate as far as puncture resistance goes (admittedly, I used the non-puncture resistant ones, but still). Also, I found the foldable kind too be too easy to take on and off the rim and that made me nervous about tire mishaps on corners and downhills.

All of my last tires (veloflex, vredestein fortezzas, these) can be are all easily mountable by hand (onto variety of box rims)... no bad luck on high speed descents yet! <knock on wood!>

hopefully the K protection on these be worthwhile!

I think of the Avocets as being the anti-OCP tire.

I'd like to get a set of their 32mm "Duro Plus" - I think that's the only true slick fatty.

Avocets are all about the carbon black - no silica. Jobst Brandt, who worked for Avocet (consulting?), and posted/posts a bunch on rec.bicycles, is a huge fan of slicks with carbon black, rather than modern (usually colored) silica-based tires or treaded tires.

I'm a big fan of Conti 4000's, and Vittoria's higher rung racing tires. Though the durability on Vittorias is non existent.

Interesting point - I hadn't even thought about the compositional differences! (few talk of it anywhere except r.b.r. archives)

What I found interesting were that all of the premium tires share almost identical tread patterns (Gommitalia, Veloflex, Vittoria, Vred Tricomp pros, etc)
