Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I bought a set of red Michelins for my Pedal Force when I'm sure that my black+grey Maxxis tires have at least 1500 miles left in 'em. Does that count?

If tires are your only impulse buy, you're lagging way behind several members of this forum.

If you have a spouse or SO, just remind them of all the much unhealthier addictions you could've chosen.

Tires and bar tape are 2 relatively easy and inexpensive things you can change that will have a fairly dramatic effect on the overall look or feel of the bike.

The thing is to change tires long before they actually wear out. After awhile, you'll have a lot of options.

From a brevet last spring, thus all the crap.

I'm much happier with the current Vittoria Rubino Pro blue tires.

I've also gone to Bontrager blue handlebar tape.

I'm contemplating buying yellow michelin pro 2 tires just to match my bike. My current plain michelin pro 2's only have about 2-300 miles on them, but I figure it never hurts to have a spare pair of tires around just in case =). Plus I'm almost positive yellow tires will add about 15 hp to my bike.

Sorry, no. I buy a new set of tires when the old ones start to go. I did buy a single folding tire once when I was going to lead an unsupported century in a remote location.

I bought a pair of Tufo tubular clinchers last year to see if I'd feel a difference. I liked 'em until the day I punctured one beyond the range of the flat fix goo they sell. I did manage to limp home with a conventional patch on the outside of the tire, but there's still some of that goo in the recesses of my rear triangle (when it lets go it sprays around and then hardens in place). In the end I decided it just wasn't worth it. To commit to that system I'd have to carry a spare tire instead of just a tube and some patches, and resign myself to tossing a tire every now and then due to punctures that a regular clincher/inner tube combo could easily handle with just a patch job.

Hi All-

Just do the tire research now to get it out of your system. When the tires need replacement, simply make the immediate purchase for which you've already completed the academic component.

I have a 'seafoam' bike with yellow tires

As for new tires, I tried the Specialized S-Works Mondo tires and they are redonkulous. I was moto gp through all the corners on descents.

That would be silly.

Now, if you were buying RED vittorias for a RED bike, that would make sense...

Though frankly, I put the vittorias on my bike because the bontragers were junk.

If your married I bet your wife probably has more than one change of undies, shoes, socks, etc. Isn't your bike just as important? (or more important ? ) Bikes should have, and deserve a complete wardrobe for different occasions, social events, weather and such. Buy 'em dude; get a couple different sets.

I need to memorize this.

How could you argue with that?
