Sixty-Nine, Dude!
Today was such a weird day of ups-and-downs that I thought I'd share.
First of all, the high temperature for the day was supposed to reach 69 degrees during my ride. I had been so sick of riding in cold and blustery conditions for the last couple of weeks that I couldn't wait to get out on the bike. I was scheduled to ride 2:40 today, so I was pretty psyched about being able to head out with just bibs, a base layer, and a short sleeve jersey.
The first 1:45 of the ride was absolutely fabulous. I felt fit, the temperature was perfect, my wattage numbers looked great, etc. But after stopping to get more water, I just could not get my legs going again. I could not put down any power at all and my legs were shot. The last time I felt that miserable was one morning when I tried to go out with the big boys on a group ride after having run 10 miles at midnight the night before.
Even though I ate well and hydrated well during the ride, at least part of the problem was that I've been operating under a mild caloric deficit over the last three days trying to make up from last week's overindulgent rest week. Another factor was that yesterday was my first set of sprint intervals for the year.
Anyway, I limped home feeling pretty sorry for myself. I was immediately cheered up, though, when I saw the email from Pedal Force informing me that my new bike ***** will be arriving TOMORROW. I was further jazzed when I actually remembered that registration for the Assault on Mount Mitchell would begin at 4:00 pm today so I was able to sign up by 4:03. I don't know how fast it sold out this year but when I checked at 5:30 all of the slots were full.
Long story short... It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the best of times. And tomorrow's forecast calls for another sixety-nine degree ride.

Sorry about the bum ride, zimbo. Maybe tomorrow will be better. Gonna be pretty nice here tomorow, too, though a few degrees cooler than where you are.
Nice blog, by the way. Maybe I'll see ya at TT in April!

It was 66 degrees up here today. Two days ago we had snow. My daughter asked if today was Spring. Sure, until Winter decides to come back in a few days or so.

We're lookin' at 68F tomorrow in CLT. I think that's the highest it's been since early December.

I'm guessing a whole bunch of people signed up for the Freewheelers just so they could ride Mitchell. Hopefully a few of those folks will find themselves out of shape in May and sell their spot at face value. That's how I managed to ride Mitchell last year.

Hey man, I'm envious - at least you can ride outside. I'll take a marginal workout in a 69 degree 'winter' day over a good workout on the trainer 9 times out of 10 I'm looking at a solid 6-8 more weeks of good solid trainer time before I can even THINK about riding outside.

Temps hit 77 today here in Texas. Yesterday, I ate a bug while riding. Today, I had to apply sunscreen before heading out the door for a 50 mile excursion. I think that makes the 2007 cycling season officially under way for me.
