Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What is a cycling cap for?

I just bought a cycling cap today, I found it for $4 so I figured why not? Anyways, I've got this thing and I'm not exactly sure what its true purpose is. Are you supposed to wear it underneath a helmet to catch sweat or keep the sun off you neck, or is it just a no helmet novelty?

Yes.

If you ever go to a pro race and see a cycling cap on the side of the road, DON'T pick it up.

Cycling caps are worn under helmet.
In summer keeps sweat out of eyes, in wiinter keeps head warmer.
With brim forward it'll keep a setting sun/rain our of your eyes . . . just yank down a bit on the brim.
With brim backwards, keeps intense sun/rain off the neck and some folks think it's 'cool.'
If your hair is on the thin side, or you are bald, it'll keep your head from looking funny with the helmet holes patterned/burned into the skin.
If you need to do roadside repair and hands get dirty, it makes for a handy rag.
A bit more versatile than a do-rag.
Nice to wear any other time too . . . show's you're a cyclist!
Own about a dozen different colored ones to go with different jerseys.
. . . and 4 bucks is cheap nowadays for a cycling cap!

I bought my first this winter. They are perfect for cool rainy days. They keep the wind off your head but aren't hot like a skull cap and the brim helps keep the rain off the glasses.

Most cycling caps have some eleastic in back end to compensate for sizing.
If cap's too large for you, get out needle and thread and put tuck or two into the back end of the cap.

I've been wearing a cycling cap under my helmet for years. Winter or summer. That's what it's for. Absorbs sweat, looks cool and is in agreement with Patentcad's #1 Rule of Cycling:

It's better to look like a pro than to ride like a pro (and easier).

I have a shaved head. If I didn't ride with a cycling cap I might have a crisp and cancerous noggin by now. Cycling caps ftw!!!

It makes you look like a fixed gear hipster, as long as you don't wear a helmet

Ahhh, someone my age. There was a time when helmets weren't really cool. I remember when they passed the mandatory "hard" shell helmet in races instead of the hairnets.

Do cycling caps come in different sizes? because i have an abnormally large head (62 cm)for some reason and I have trouble keeping my cycling cap all the way down. I also look like an idiot with a small cap on my head.

Me too. I love cycling caps.

But it made me look like a circus gorilla wearing a plastic cap
