Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wheel Pit Protocol

New to racing and I'm wondering about the wheel pit concept. Do all racers deposit wheels? When puncturing, do they take their own wheel, or the most convenient wheel? If someone doesn't deposit wheels, are they SOL if puncturing? I'd think the pit would be a disorganized mess of wheels. How are wheels labeled/organized to make finding one's own wheels not take forever? Seems like it'd be easy to lose wheels in that mess. Is that common? (someone else grabbing your wheels) Curious minds...

It varies race to race, but most races are wheel-in wheel-out. Meaning, you gotta deposit to withdraw.

If you hit the pit, TAKE YOUR OWN WHEEL. If you don't have a wheel in the pit, then, well, you're SOL.

not always the easiest thing to do when you're in a rush.

also - make sure that roberto gaggioli doesn't walk away with your wheels.

Easier than tracking down the ******* who took your wheel! And in most crits, if you flat and make it known to the race ref, they'll often give you a "free lap" (if the rule is in effect). So hopefully that alleviates some of the rush.
