Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How a bicycle saved my life

Last couple of years I felt my professional and personal life were out of whack. Couldn't put my finger on it but something was wrong. I sat down and tried to figure out what I really enjoyed doing. I liked riding so I started riding my bike more and more. I even rode in the cold which is something I never even considered in years past.
All of sudden I feel like I've actually accomplished something. My health is better. My attitude is more positive. I'm enjoying life more and I'm going to work towards a masters.

Riding that bike changed me and made me feel like me again.

Amazing what exercise can do for ya isn't it? Just imagine how great things could be (and how healthy we could all be) if everyone discovered what you and the rest of us on these forums have discovered. What are you getting your masters in?

Healthcare Management. I've found a program designed for physicians. I'm really excited about it.

Exercise in general is good all around! But cycling is definitely the coolest form, IMHO.

Since the weather has turned nicer here the last 2 weeks and I've been able to get out and ride, my mental health has improved considerably.

There is nothing like those days when you feel like you're riding with no chain. Love that feeling. Worth all the pain and heavy breathing. That's why I ride.

I am recovering from pneumonia (waited too long before seeing doc) and after being off the bike for almost 3 weeks (after at least 2 rides a week for about a year) I'm ready to chew on the business end of a 12 gauge!

Or, you will see me on the 5:00 news on top of a tall building, naked, with a high powered rifle, picking off pedestrians.

Pathdoc, congrats on new found enthusiasm.

Truly.

Good on ya pathdoc. If you ever get down Plano way in the pre-dawn hours and see a bike commuter with more blinkies going than a UFO, that might just be me.

Well, they offer all kinds of tax incentives for people buying/driving hybrid cars, so.....

They should offer tax breaks for people who buy a new bike, and/or components and clothing. Maybe it will help some of the morbidly obese people in this country get off their duffs and get into shape as well. (I'd never pay income tax again. )

I know cycling has helped me immensly. I lost 40#, dropped the BP and RHR in no time. All this, and some better eating habits really has made my overall outlook on life differant than it was before.

good for you!!
I cant say it saved my life but it had added much more happiness.
I have a hectic life like everyone else, just so tied down with responsabilities, biking and running is where I feel the most happy and free.
I couldnt give those up for anything.

When I got my MS in management (and analysis) specializing in healthcare mgmnt there were a fair number of physicians studying as well.

I always hated that because they f*ed the curve.

Pathdoc,

did you ride M&M (morning) or DBLite (afternoon) on Sunday 2/25? I think I saw that bike. Not too many orange Torellis around.

Still work in Richardson? Ever try commuting to work? I have a great route if you're interested.

A cure for everything but loneliness - its a lonely road for me anyway, I dont have any friends nevermind know anyone who even rides a bicycle. I'd probably prefer riding alone in the long run anyways, but it must be nice to ride with another person once and a while.

Pathdoc,

You'll probably be starting up at UTD about the time I'm finishing up my Masters, though in a different field. We still need to get together for a ride some time soon too. Good luck on the new degree goal and to staying in shape via cycling!
