Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

creative bar taping?

I was hoping for some inspiration on two-tone bar wraps, whether overlapping or crisscrossed. Anyone have any pictures of said tape jobs?

I know there are pictures out there of it, I just couldn't find anything on searching for them.

Slick indeed, that black and blue harlequin accent would look awesome on my black and blue LeMond.

It has no absorption of road vibration, absorbs all the rain in the world and just doesn't feel nice. I use it on my fixie with my nitto drops, but its strictly aesthetic deal

The cloth tape is the best. It's cheap, durable, feels good on the hands, doesn't absorb much water, and you can easily replace the stuff one side at a time.

But, normal bar tape is like that too. Not to mention, if i get grease on my cork, i just take a wet rag to it and Bam, clean bar tape

Or for something a little different, you could use leather bar wrap.

I wouldn't want to tape my entire bars with it, but I would put it over the top at the end of my regular tape. I've used cloth tape on Hockey sticks and it wears pretty quickly in the presence of water/sweat. The article says to shellac it, but that might make it more effort than it's worth.

I bet it would be very hard if not impossible. The cloth tape is thin and very flexible.

yeah and the way the synthetic is tapered at the sides would make for a very lumpy bar...

I'm just gonna have to try cloth and see what I think. (I love the look of that harlequin... and that could be a fun way to spend an evening after the kids are asleep.)

Not with the way that this guy does it because of all the folding involved. However, I seem to remember other techniques. Anyone seen something similar with cork tape? Here's another version of the same technique from FGG, and another from Rivendell (can't tell what they use). But I couldn't find anything else using cork.

BTW, you can get nice cloth tape from Rivendell but it'll run up to 10 bucks a roll. I've gotten some nice cloth tape (for non-bike projects) from hardware stores before, but they have limited colors.

Here's some tape from velo @ $3.25 per roll

I am currently building up a stealth bike which is mostly black and no decals on the frame. I've recently entertained the idea of making it a bit different by using either red or grey cable housing. With that said, i'm very interested in doing the same pattern as above with the corresponding colors

I buy mine from Velo Orange as well. Cheap (just remember to order at least two for one set of bars), good shipping prices and the owner seems like a good guy. I wish Cat Eye tape was more widely available. It is nicer than the Tressostar stuff that seems to be the only thing available now.

tape bizzarro

wanna be different? On my beaters I take an old innertube cutting from the valve in a corkscrew pattern 2"wide. It makes a never slip handlebar tape. For extra soft use foam under it.It sounds strange but it works.
