Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

am i too heavy for my bike? trek madone 5.2

hey guys, this is kind of embarassing, but i'm wondering if i'm too heavy for my '06 trek madone 5.2. i weigh 240lbs. i bought the bike when i weighed 210lbs. and needless to say i haven't ridden in a while and i don't want to do anything detremental to the bike as i want to get back into riding pretty hardcore. i'm 6'2" if that matters but i doubt it does. thanks

Nah, you should be fine on the frame. If you've got the paired spoke Race X Lites you might beat up the wheels - but that's easily solved with a solid 32h build wheelset.

+1 you'll destory the wheels long before the frame. I remember my LBS said Trek CF frames don't have a weight limit, if that's any consolation.

I think you are going to be fine as well. That is a great frame. However, if you are too heavy and it happens to be a size 58, I would take it off of your hands in a flash.

haha it is a 58. and that is some consolation that the trek frames don't have weight limits. i don't plan on being this fat for long. hopefully i'll be back to 220 in a month

Yep, the frame'll be fine. I'd be more concerned about the wheels. A pair of 32-spoke Mavics or something would be a nice, sturdy training set.

+1 the wheels. At 240 you may experience a whole new kind of taco. I've ridden in the 230 range with no problems before...besides my lack of power/speed. Get riding and report back!!!

You plan on losing 20 pounds in a month? I wouldn't recommend it. You could pull it off in theory, but you'd more than likely be doing it at the expense of some muscle that you need to pedal that bike around.

+1 to replacing the wheels with a standard 32h 3x pattern.

It's tough to beat Performance's Open Pro/Ultegra deal, but make sure to adjust the hub bearings when they arrive -- they'll be too tight out of the box. Also, I'd stress-relieve them (takes 2 minutes), and check the tension consistency by plucking spokes. If the tension is all over the place, get the tension leveled.

bike frames are really tough. There are plenty of people riding bikes that are heavier than you. My friend weighs a good 60lbs more than you and her frame is doing just fine. We did however have to buy a new bomb proof wheel for the back after the stock wheels cried uncle and kept popping spokes. She also never gets up over potholes so that back wheel takes quite a jolt on every ride.

I actually emailed Trek about weight limits on their frames and they said all Madone frames have NO weight limit.

i'm only 22 and it's pretty easy for me to gain/lose weight. all i need is the motivation to get back on a strict diet and start riding again every day. haha that's the tough part though...where to find motivation...

I would get a really beefy pair of wheels and you should be fine. If you're still concerned, check the chain stays, fork and bottom bracket for damage. Those are the likely places.

I guess they figure if you weigh too much you probably can't physically get on the bike....

Who cares, its a Trek. If you break it, send it back and they will give you another one.

Um... No... To lose 20 pounds of fat in 30 days, you need to lose 2/3 pound per day. That means you need to run a calorie deficit of roughly 2400 calories every day. If you could ride 4 hours or so at 600 calorie/hour every day without eating more, you could do it.

But I have a hard time believiing that you can do it in a healthy manner, and the weight that comes off fast is most likely to come back on. It's also likely you'd tear down muscle.

Most people don't recommend more than a couple of pounds a week.
