Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Does $930 = $1000 in a discussion?

I just started thinking about this when I was corrected for saying at set of Ksyrium SSC SL's are 1k. One guy came back and said, "They are only $875." My reply was, "Ok, well about $930 after taxes, so 1K."

Sure the simple fact is they are about $930 but when you are talking about something casually should someone be so demanding in reminding you that you rounded up less than $100? Or am I wrong is saying I spent 1K when I spent 930 and change?

Ok, this is a bit off topic but I am guessing if someone has $2,880 in a bike they say it's worth 3k not 2,880. Am I wrong?

It depends, if talking to the wife about a wheelset I just bought for $930 I generally round down to about $500.

Should have heard the rounding and twisting of numbers I did yesterday after I ordered my new frameset. I used the same logic as she does when she goes shopping and actually "saves" money by buying five pairs of shoes.

Just one this time, a Fuji Team Issue. It will look nice with my other five bikes that I have saved money by buying.

The owner of my LBS generally misplaced a decimal point when the bill is presented to the wife. So he rounded $5000 to $500.

Well, the LBS guy is looking at selling price, not taxes. So 1k is not $875. That is a pair of Assos shorts in difference.

You're both wrong. It's $874.95 and $944.95 after tax

Really, it just depends on how anal you are. If you're on pricepoint, it might make a difference. In casual conversation, it's close enough. But obviously important enough to start a whole thread on

I'd use the same strategy if I HAD $1000 to drop on any bike part!

But they are nit-picking! To me $900 is the same as $1000. All the same!!

OK. You send me $1000, I'll send you $900 and we're even. I'll do this as many times as you want.

I try not to even mention prices. When my girlfriend asked how much my new Powertap rear wheel cost me, I simply replied "It wasn't too bad, I even got it at 25% of retail!". Discussion of prices = BAD!
