A rebuttal for the "that racer snob didn't wave at me" crowd

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A rebuttal for the "that racer snob didn't wave at me" crowd

So I was out on my usual training loop a couple days ago doing a tempo ride. Pinarello bike, team kit, all matching, the whole nine. I'm cruising along and see another cyclist coming the other direction. Flat bar roadie, panniers, neon yellow jacket, blinky headlight, older guy, casual pace. And being that unless I'm really in the hurt box I will always wave at a fellow cyclist, I did just that. And I'm not talking about a little nod or lifting the fingers off the bar. I lifted my left hand off the bar and waved. And instead of waving back, dude just shoots me this look and keeps riding.

Those old guys with neon jackets and panniers and flat bar roadies sure are mean.

Yeah, like hey. What's up widdat?

Yesterday morning I'm hammering to work and see another cyclist coming the other way. So, I stick up my arm like I know the answer to something and I get nothing in return.

... well, it was pitch black out and I couldn't see anything but his lights. But dang it, it felt like he snubbed me. Jaggoff!

Same thing happens to me with the Obachans (old ladies) with purple hair here. They never wave to me.

I gave up waving at people, its about 3-1 against in these parts. Always wave back when I'm waved at of course.

So I was out riding the other day whan I passed this skinny little guy on a skinny little bicycle that gave me this condescending wave. He did it in a really obligatory manner that made me believe he felt he was being watched by the Cycling Gods. He had a look of pity on his face when he gazed on my meager bike and cycling attire. There was no way I was going to respond to this useless arrogant jerk. From his appearance I think he may even be on this forum somewhere.

Whoever you are....... You ain't all that!!!!

when I'm hurtin' so that my teeth feel like they're about to fall out, all I can usually do is nod, or race a coupla fingers at most. that's usually all I get anyway.

I get more attention from racer types if I'm in kit. could be they know/recognize the team, that or the team's name is xXx.

that's becasue he knew you were a posing Lance wannabe,a nd not a real cyclist who rides hundreds of mile through the rain for actual transportation.

Was ABH embroidered on the panniers?

Yes they are, but not as mean as us old guys with yellow jackets and saddlebags and drop-bar roadies - we'll freakin kill ya for such impertinence!

The guy I ride with most gets a kick out of waving at EVERYONE. He laughs at how you can tell some people get uncomfortable with it. Kinda makes me laugh now too so we both ALWAYS wave just to get a chuckle.

People seem to wave back if they're riding something similar, and dressed in a similar fashion. It helps if it's in a place where there are not hordes of people...

Neon jackets, straight bars, panniers... sounds like almost every member of Bikeforums.net, apart from the ones who post in road bike racing.

Pete, you should dub him something like "The Knave" and write up awesome stories about your battles with him around the Beltway.

[oh... that's been done already elsewhere? nevermind.... ]
