Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Happy ending to my stolen bike (sort of)

Well, I posted a few weeks back about how my Merckx/full Record was stolen out of my parking garage. I am happy to report that my renter's insurance will cover the FULL replacement cost of it and I am getting the money right now as we speak. Now I get to shop for a new bike...

Between this, my no-hassle mortgage process with USAA and all sorts of other great things I get from them, USAA has my business for life. If any of you out there are eligible for USAA stuff and don't use it, I'd highly recommend them. If nothing else, pay the $20 per year in renter's insurance in case your bike gets stolen.

Good outcome for the owner and the thief. Bad outcome for the insurance company.

If you find your bike, do you have to pay them back?

If the bike shows up later, it technically belongs to the insurance company.

There is very rarely a bad outcome for an insurance company.

This happened to me. I got a new bike paid for by insurance, police found the stolen bike. I called the insurance company and told them that a friend wanted to buy the stolen bike and they had him send a check (reduced value due to being stolen, scratched, etc) Everyone was happy.

Epilogue - the bike got stolen AGAIN from my friend.

Smartmoney pointed out a bit of a bonus for USAA investors. Guys like Tom Marsico manage funds for them, and the fees are less than they are for the equivalent Marsico funds. Sweet.
