Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

any women's only rides in Portland?

I'm helping a friend find women's only road rides in the Portland area. She climbs strong, can keep a good pace on the flats, and can ride for at least 2 hours now, which will increase as the season goes on. Can you recommend any clubs, shops, or links? Thanks.

Excluding most of the cycling population from the list of acceptable riding companions before even meeting them to see if she'd like them will limit her options -- particularly if she's looking for something that's well-supported. Especially with the shorter rides, the goal is normally to attract more riders.

Probably it would be easiest for her to just ride with her friends or stick to trainers and spin classes at womens' fitness centers.

The Bike Gallery has some women's only rides. I think they meet at the Hollywood store. She could call them to find out for sure.

Thank you Dean, that's the kind of info I'm looking for. She's just looking for regular group rides with other women.

Nothing wrong with looking for women specific clubs or rides. Some people are just more comfortable starting out in that environment...if it gets them riding, I don't see the problem. Me...I prefer riding with the boys!

That said...to the OP...you might have better luck asking over at Team Estrogen, it's a very active women's forum.

RiverCity does women-only rides on Saturday mornings. I have seen the group heading out a couple of times and they look fast...

Have her google Sorella Forte. They do several women's only group rides, both race training and slower paced.

Tragically, some of the men of the cycling world can be jackasses, particularly to women - or at least overly competitive. That or they'll unpleasantly flirt endlessly.

Sorella Forte does a rec and training ride from NW Thurman on Saturday Mornings. River City also has a womens-only ride.

You can find more info at the OBRA club rides list.

These were her exact reasons for wanting women only rides.

Thanks for all the good info and links, this should really help her out. We've been talking about a cross country bike trip this summer with some other friends. I'm hoping a good spring will make it more likely to happen.
