Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

As Smoothie's signature states: "Owning an expensive bike does not necessarily make one a Bike Racer."

That statement rings true time after time when lookin' at the gear on these here forums.

btw - look at this Fred's bike... dude's got to flip it.

Thanks Botto. Pretty common knowledge that Floyd could not endure a big saddle to bar drop prior to his successful hip surgery. They could have given him a few spacers and no stem rise but chose that route. Perhaps his preference from his mountain biking days.
George
P.S. Also note how much he has his bars rotated up...top sweep of the bar is almost horizontal with Campy hoods pointing rearward. Perhaps he learned from Lance you don't have ride like Ullrich to be fast.

I miss your point RW. His saddle to bar drop looks to be 6 inches or very aggressive and his stem is pointed down in true racer fashion. Doesn't fit in at all with the BF crowd lol.
As to stacking spacers above the stem, pretty common in racing circles.
George
P.S. didn't slow this guy down too much:

C'mon botto...you know it's not what works best. It's what looks best that matters most.

P.S. didn't slow that guy down too much that owned this bike:

...gotta have a power meter...

...can't have spacers above the bar....

...need my bike set up like a 110 pound 5 foot Italian climber except I am 6 feet tall and weight 195...

...spacer stacking is common is REAL racing circles...

...I want my bike set up to look like Boonen's...it works for him so it must work for me...

I can't flip my stem because a saddle to bar drop of more than three inches kills my back. Fortunately, like Landis, I'm winning races this way :-)

It's not about the looks of the bike, only the way you can ride it to it's max potential.

Please do not sully this thread with a sensible response. It just doesn't belong.

On this upturned stem/spacer thing. Lookin' good aside, seems that as weight weenies we should never want any spacers or any extra steerer length in there - just the straightest distance (least weight) between two points - the handlebar height and the top of the headtube. Unless your saddle is on top of the TT your handlebar height will be above the HT - therefore an upturned stem. Seems like any spacers at all should be derided. Set me straight on this one.
