Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Fastest mph sprint recorded?

Just wondering would that be. Just a regular road bike with no aerobars or special helmet going flat out on flat pavement with no wind? Like say in a crit race environment....the final dash before the finish line.

Somewhere between 45 and 50 mph. At least for long road races (which usually see the pros driving ~30+ mph for a couple MILES leading up to the finish line... and that's after already hundreds of miles on the road).

The record for a sprint on the track is just under 46 mph. I can't imagine roadies go faster than that, unless it's a slight downhill.

Believe it's around 40. Those multi-mile pushes at the end of a stage are usually in the high 20's.

The track record is for 200m for a solo rider who had to accelerate himself and maintain the speed for that distance. In a road sprint, a rider is accelerated by the pack and may maintain top speed for only 50 m. I'm certain the fastest road sprint is faster than 46 mph.

Theo Bos is the fastest cyclist in the 200m, where he did it in 9.772s with a top speed of 72.786 km/h (45.23mph).
All of this at sea level in Moscow, not in Denver or somewhere like that.

I've got to think its faster than that. In my weekly club race I've sprinted to 41mph in a totally flat finishing section... I'm a decent sprinter, but I'm no pro

I thought Mario Cippolini had the fastest recorded sprint. Maybe not...

You're probably thinking about the time he won the fastest grand tour stage. It was a stage of the Tour de France, downhill with a tailwind. I don't know if that record has been broken since.

It must be well over 40 - as noted, it's not terribly hard to get up to 40 on any bit of smooth road - especially if there's a cooperative wind. On my club's 'slow ride' this morning I got up to 40.3 on a gentle downhill with a tail wind. (which then buggered my average as I had to toodle about at the bottom to let people catch up)

Stage Four of the 1999 Tour de France averaged 50.355 km/h (31.29mph) for 194.5 km (just under 121 miles).
