Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The Life of a Michelin Pro Race 2. long??

I have been using Michelin Dynamics for the past half-year and they've held up wonderfully (not that I've ridden all that much), but I believe I want to go on to the Michelin Pro Race 2 (I'm getting more active too).

Fact: Dynamics are around $30 a pair brand new.

Main Concern: How long are the Pro Race 2 tire lifes? Long? (I dodge glass, etc, and roads I ride are just normal okay asphalt roads, I dodge potholes).

I know their performance is very nice, but you can tell me moree on it if you'd like plus I love the coloring on the tires.

How much do you weigh? I wear them out pretty quick (rears anyway) but Im a pretty big boy.. I doubt any tire would hold up under my girth.

I generally replace them after about 1000 miles.

I have the front one for 11 months now, on the second rear (the first got cut on some metal). Maybe 2 punctures on the rear. These wheels have done 7200km in that time.

Oh, and I weight around 90kg, which is maybe 200 pounds??

My experience is they cut pretty easily and shouldn't be used as an everyday training tire.

I tried Michelin Pro Race 2 after using Continental GP 4000 and found they wear much faster than the Contis. The Michelin held less than 1000 miles while Conti will hold much longer before they need to be replaced.

I am 230 Pounds.

I weigh 188. I keep them pumped at 100-105psi. I get close to 3000 miles out of a set and could probably get another few hundred miles if I wanted to push it.

Don't rotate !

You buy three tires, and replace the rear when it wears out. You do not (!)
put a square worn tire up front. That's just not something you want to do!

I got Michelin Pro Race 2's on my Giant OCR 2 - My rear lasted only a couple hundred miles - I ran over a small cut, and flatted out, then blew out the sidewall when I didn't seat the tire properly. (3 flats in one day - long story). I'm replaing them with Continental Gator Skins.

How do you determine if a tire needs replacing or is worn out for tires that are smooth (no threads) like the Michelin Pros ?

it gets squared off, rough, and you tend to spot various cuts quite easily.

If you could see me now, you'd see that I do not at all seem to care
whether you prefer to rotate the tiers or not It is under no
circumstances to be recommended due to safety reasons.

I remember a pic of you once cornering in something that seemed
to be in high speed. You can't seriously reccomend that to be done
with a square tire ?

There's no buck saved by rotating compared to running three tires.

the trick is to rotate the back to the front before it starts to square.

I don't have an issue with my Pro 2's wearing fast. I have 1,500 +/- on them and they are holding up just fine. I weigh 205, train on them exclusively.

You can purchase Pro 2's from Probikekit for $27.84 with free shipping. Well worth it IMO.

Just curious, about how much are you able to extend the life of the tires by rotating? I've never rotated my tires, don't see any square shoulders... at least nothing that's visible to me. How many miles do you ride before rotating?

Thanks.

"Heavier" than the Pro Race 2s, but offer more cut resistance. Same ride quality. The cost is a weird one. Some places sell 'em for less, some for more. I can't place it, but my LBS has the Krylions for less than the Pro Race 2. I think Performance has them for more ..

And I second the rotation. You gotta do it. The Pro Race 2's last longer when I do that.

I put over 3,000 miles on the rear PR2 on my training bike. THe front still looked great so I bought a new set from PBK over the winter and now have a spare. I seem to get between 2 to 3,000 miles out of them if I stay away from major road hazards. BTW...I weigh 190-195lbs during riding season. If you're a light weight....they should last you a long time.

I have PR2's for racing and training. They are the _best_ tire ever made IMO. I weigh about 155, and get 2000 miles easy out of them. Cut resistance is great, almost never flat on them. Plus, they have low rolling resistance, but are still very grippy. My 3.5 hour ride in pouring rain yesterday speaks well to the grippyness.

i've got about 3000 miles on a pair right now and they're still going. they're starting to get little micro cracks but they've been very durable with very few flats.

Try this site for tire prices. https://biketiresdirect.com/

Yes the are heavier in 700X23 the weight diff is 15 gr per tire.

I go for the three rear tires to one front.
