How's the thickness of the Fizik Microtex? I'm going to be building my Serotta up with Aero levers with bars that don't have any grooves. The S-wrap is usually thick enough to make take the bump out of the casing. But the Microtex looks very nice and would look good on the cinelli bars & stem (though ViperZ may think I'm stealing his idea. )

Hi All-
My riding friends and I used to love that stuff back in the 1980's! Our favorite technique at the time was to wrap our bars with white cotton cloth tape as a thin layer of padding, and then wrap the Benotto plastic tape on top. The other thing was "candystriping" the bars using two different rolls of Benotto...it looked cool! Now you've got me thinking all nostalgic...maybe I can find some NOS tape buried in a shop somewhere!

The Fizik Microtex is thinner than Cinelli cork on the edges, but in the center section is about as thick (~1.6mm). In fact that is the one thing I don't like about the Fizik is the edges can roll up too easily. It's not a real issue for they snap back down, however it's a minor annoyance.

My favorites are Profile's synthetic cork (Nonadhesive, thick, super comfy & it lasts a good long time) and Performance's fake Carbon weave wrap (same plus' as Profile and it's a cool, different look).

I've used the following
Cinelli - not bad, available everywhere.
Deda - Got beat up looking really fast.
Stella Eleganza - good, I like it. long lasting, but kind of expensive. not too crazy about the sewn thread aesthetics.
Performance Gel type - I like it a lot, feels good. I just starting using it, so no word on durability. it was CHEAP. I paid 6$ on sale.

I find this to be just the opposite, first the microtex is thinner all the way around than Cinelli cork (tape I use to use exclusively from 1989 through 2004), if wrapped properly my Fizik tape has never rolled in over 3000 miles of use.

Ride it like you stole it
On my primary bike I have almost always used Cinelli Gel cork, simply because it does not have an adhesive strip, I like the feel and I replace it every season whether it needs it or not. On other bikes I have used the Performance cork tape, much cheaper and isn't too bad either.
I have a question for all those using the Deda/Stella tape, since I am going to use it for the first time on my PF RS rebuild. How does it hold up and how does it feel compared to Cinelli cork? It seems a little smoother in texture but cushier than the Cinelli. Are my impressions correct?
Thanks in advance.
