Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Relaxed Carbon Frame..........

One poster asked about an inexpensive carbon frame which prompted some good replies for the younger set.

Being an old fart, with a beat up body, I'm interested in a carbon frame with a longer head tube and shorter TT, and very relaxed geometry. Something similar to a Trek Pilot.

Naturally it has to be cheap.

Anything like that out there?

Fuji makes a relaxed frame.. I think it can be ordered seperately.

JayC,

Thanks. The Fuji Pro 3 is $1800 as a bike, so the frame and fork could be over 1k by itself, but I will check on Monday. Thanks for the heads up.

Any others out there?

Shifty & PhatRoadie,

Thanks again. I will check to see if that is available as a frame and fork, but like the Fuji, it might be expensive. The poster who made me think of this was directed to several frames under 1K.

I'm probably being a bit unrealistic but you never know.

Civic,

I would love a Pilot, but the frame is over 2K by itself. Way out of my price range. Did you consider the SPA model?

Kestrel Evoke...not cheap...but the top tube is a lot shorter than most frames of equivalent size.

As I said before, thanks, but........anything under 1K? The poster who made me think of this was directed to Pedal Force, but that frame is not as upright as I want.

If your budget is $1K, you might want to look at the Fusion from Pedal Force. Its not full carbon but it is more upright than the rest of their bikes.

Another vote for the Roubaix. Believe it or not, it's actually pretty relaxed, and also has the vibration dampening inserts in the seat stays and forks. I've heard good things about it being one of the most comfortable roadies on the market. Especially over rough roads.

^^ But that's MSRP. You can easily find that elsewhere for much less. My guess would be around $2000-$2500. But that's just a guess.

Roubaix Pro with a DA/Ultegra mix for $3700. Yup, very expensive, but one of the best. I'll bet you could have them upgrade it to full DA and still be under 4k. For suh a nice frame, I would almost go for it myself. I really like the technology behind the concept of vibration dampening.

Presume you mean Specialized. I don't agree. I think they they are an innovative company with excellent R&D that will only get better with time.

Your criteria are pretty mutually exclusive....cheap and comfort CF. I too am an old fart and love carbon for its ride and performance. Keep in mind that the riding position on most comfort geometry road bikes can be replicated on a conventional geometry frame by judicious choice in terms of sta and tt length and overall frame size. The term creative marketing can be applied to the bevy of comfort geometry bikes targeted for well heeled boomers.
Carbon ain't cheap...rock bottom is about $1K for a new frameset for last year's closeout. Cheapest value is likely Giant OCR or an off brand Taiwan copy of a name brand frame.
Good Luck,
George
