Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Carbon Wheels / Brake Pads

I got a set of Reynolds Attacks through my club this year, at a considerable discount; so far I am loving the wheels; not the lightest of carbon wheels, but stiff, and you can really carve on them with confidence.

They came with some cork pads and I was dumb enough not to test them out before my first race. I found them really "grabby" compared to the regular dura ace pads on the metal braking surface.

What are my other (best) options for pads? I had heard Zipp makes a good compound for carbon.

KoolStop Carbon (black pads) or Ceramic (green pads), SwissStop Carbon (yellow pads) seem to be the best pads out there. The Zipp pads are made by one of them, I just can't remember which.

I've been using the KoolStops on my KOM's and Stratus wheels and like them a lot. I find them to be a tad more grabby the first couple of times I hit the brakes but after that they are much like my Campy pads. BTW do not use your cork pads on you al wheels. I had to use al wheels after I flatted in a race and the pads got little pieces of al in bedded into them. T

Thanks for the tips guys. I think some of the guys behind me must have been pissed by my erratic braking today. I pride myself on being non-squirrely. Irksome and bedevilling cork!

Zipp pads are made by Koolstop. I'm using those on my 303s.

Can any of these pads be used both for a standard clincher rim and the carbon rim? I had heard the Zipp/koolstop pads worked all right for both.

What brake pads do you recommend for Reynolds Carbon wheels?

We recommend Swiss Stop Yellow King Compound carbon brake pads. We also recommend Kool Stop black carbon specific brake pads. Cork pads may not be used with Reynolds carbon wheels and using them will void your warranty.

Huh that's bizarre. My LBS owner pulled the cork pads right out of the box along with the special spoke wrench for the embedded nipples. Oh well, it's just one race, I'm sure to be ok. I'll try the Koolstops as I believe no one carries the Swiss Stops here.

The Zipp pads are supposed to be compatible with both carbon and aluminum rims. But I would not use the pads on carbon after using them on alu rims because the pads pick up little aluminum pieces which would destroy the carbon rims quickly. I would get dedicated pads for the different rims.

You didn't read my post! I'm hurt! Hey the carbon pads are softer and they can get small bits of al imbedded into them. This will scratch the braking surface of your carbon wheels.
