Cannondale frame type?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cannondale frame type?

I came across a cannondale r500 that has really long rear dropouts. the seat stays go into the chainstays about 2 inches before the dropouts . Any one know what years these were in production?

yeah, my wife has an R300 from 1995 that's like that also. I thought it might have been to accomodate her small frame size (I think it's a 50cm).

No, in 1996, all the road frames were like that... I have the catalogue.

My guess is that it was an attempt to build a little leaf spring into the rear triangle, but the common (incorrect) perception is that these were/are harsh riding.

You have something Cannondale called the cantilever dropout. I don't know the advantage other than back then it looked cool, it allowed Cannondale to weld the seatstay to the chainstay without worrying about the dropout, and they hung the frames from said dropouts (they were all threaded for a while) after painting. I never verified the last statemetn. The 3.0's and 2.7's had them. They started in the early 1990's or late 1980's. The 2.7 frames were out in 1992 and were the second generation to have those rear dropouts.

if you look at the serial number (either under BB, on chainstay, or on rear dropout) it probably has the year on it.

hope this helps

As I recall from working there many years ago, the head engineer was a stiffness nut, and by making the rear triangle shorter, it would become stiffer. That why they also had the "sideways" seatstays ... for improved stiffness. It's funny to see all the current gimmicks to reduce stiffness in the rear triangle.

I still have my 3.0 with cantilevered dropouts from about 1987 and took it for a ride yesterday.

Thanks for all the info. I assumed that it was mid or early nineties which seems mighty old for an aluminum frame . No way to know the mileage .I did see an old cannondale with a separated headtube being stripped down at my LBS . I may have to pass on this one.
