Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Another chain ring option?

I just picked up the new bike and I was wondering if anyone had switched their 53/39 chain rings to 53/38 or 52/38. I want to get a weeeee bit lower gearing without going the compact route (yes, I will probably get a 12-27 for those climbing days). The crankset in question is a FSA Gossamer. The BCD of the other rings are 130mm BCD as well.

I figure I'd have to drop the front derailleur a mm or two, but are there any other issues to consider?

Would it be wise to get a 52 on the big ring to decrease the drop?

Thank ya!

53-->52...
1/53=1.9% change.
If you think that's enough go for it but I don't think you'll notic much of a difference. I'd do the rear cassete first. If you really want to try out a 52 borrow one from a friend with a triple first.

Just get the compact and get it over with. Dropping one tooth might not even be noticeable. I rock a girly 50-34, and still drop the Lance wannabes at 19mph. (unless they had been racing, there is no way they could match my speed)

But seriously, why do you not want a compact? A compact sounds like exactly what you want.

You'll get a larger overall range for less hassle if you just replace your cassette with an 11-30T one. Might need to add a few links to the chain, but otherwise it should be hassle-free.

Lance wannabes are doing 19 mph? They need to take the extra speedo magnet off their wheel.

I did exactly that. Changed the 39 to a 38 on an FSA Gossamer MegaExo crank. I ran a 11-32 cassette too. Sold that bike last Sunday though

That was an homage to R600DuraAce. It was also shorthand for: "I'm sure I can get at least into the high 30s without breaking 100rpm".

I believe that post was the original mention of 400 watts. A piece of history, that.

The only time I've ever seen someone want to make such a small shange was for junior gearing in races. Going down one tooth on a chainring is a smaller change than going up one tooth on a cassette. We're talking about 1 gear inch difference here, or about 1-2 rpm when climbing.
