Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Advice on 26.0mm carbon bars

I’m wondering if anyone is using 26.0mm carbon bars, and if they have noticeable more flex then 31.8mm bars. The stock stem and bars on my bike are OS and built like a tank, and also weighs as much. I found a good deal on a pair of 26.0mm carbon bars, but am worried if I will notice any flex. I’m 165 lbs. 5’10” and mainly do recreational rides, no racing. What I’m looking for is a bar that will save me some weight and also smooth out the rough roads that seem to be getting rougher.

thanks,
oliverw

31.8mm bars are only that size in the center clamp area. Personally, I wouldn't go with 26mm full carbon bars. I think the reason for 31.8mm bars was to beef up that area actually (I may be wrong on that though...wouldn't be the first time).

I find that carbon bars do a SMALL ammount for road buzz. However, with the concern about not being able to clamp carbon really tight (unless there's an aluminum insert, in which case you might be ok), I'd want the larger stem. I've had 26.0 bars slip on me but I've never had 31.8 bars move on me, and I've tried carbon and aluminum. On the other hand, if you crash on carbon bars, or supposedly if you drop it too hard, you have to buy new bars because there have been several cases of handlebar failure.
