How do manufacturers get away with false component weight claims?
Almost every component weighs more than the manufacturer claims it does. How do they get away with this? Is it somehow not false advertising?

Throw the stick!!!!
They have one somewhere that weighs the claimed amount. Of course it is extra small and doesn't have bearings in it.

The FTC can onlyhandle so many complaints. Bike parts sold to a few thousand folks are well below their radar screen.

For wheels, for instance, I'm sure they're weighed without quick releases, rim strips, etc. That alone accounts for probably 70-ish grams. Other than that, I'd guess nobody ever really calls them to account for it, and so they get by with no real official pressure to be honest.

There are tolerances for variation in manufacturing. That, and they can just plain lie. Who's gonna stop them?
Or maybe they weight it somewhere other than Earth.

I'd assume they weigh the first pieces off the production line and make sure they're manufactured exactly to specification. I know that in the case of rims, the older the rim molds are, the heavier the rims tend to be. Why that is I dunno, just what I've heard.
Also, they probably lie

why the hell has Weight Weenies stopped adding new components to their lists? There's barely been any additions in the last 18 months! Just when they were getting popular, the guy seems to have decided it was too much work, so he's basically shut it down. There used to be new stuff on there every week. The "239 frames" hasn't moved for almost a year
