Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Argh.. That Hurt.

Well today I had my first crash. A very painful, expensive and stupid crash.

I smashed my left handlebar into the side of a car. It had slowed down way faster then I expected. All I remember is going over the handlebars and then getting up. No major injuries; a busted lip, sore shoulders, a few scrapes and a severely bruised left leg. Oh god the leg hurts.

The bike took most of the damage. Clean break of the top tube just before the weld. Severely bent down tube and the left side of the handlebars and brifter are royally ****ed. Amazingly my wheels, fork (maybe) and the rest of the bike came through rather well.

I forgot to take some photos before I dropped the bike off at the shop, maybe I'll get some when they call me. Waiting to hear from them what my options are.

... my legs hurts

Hi DC-

Glad to hear you're essentially OK save for the scrapes. What kind of bike? If it was Carbon Fiber you're very lucky there wasn't an explosion...you could have been burned to death. Best wishes for a fast recovery.

Well, good luck. Obviously crashes can be much worse. You think there might be something more severely wrong with the leg?

You dropped it off at the shop? For what? Sounds like the bike is totally screwed.

Get better.

I went to the hospital right away for X-Rays and stuff. They sent me home with the guarantee all was ok and they'd call me if something came up. I think it's just really bruised and stiff. It could be broken though, so I'm not complaining to much.

I dropped it off at the shop because it will end up there anyway. I'm good friends with some of the guy there and they said they'd get back to me on what I can do. Chances are new frame and brifters are in order.

It was a Fuji Newest 1.0 '06. Nothing special, but all I had.

(Carbon Fibre fork was ok I think, amazingly)

Last rites, perhaps... Or maybe to become a local legend when all the LBS employees show it off to their buddies?

Glad you're OK. Bikes are much easier to fix and/or replace than people, so all in all you got the better part of the deal. Heal up soon!

Glad to hear you are okay, sucks about the bike though. Any damage to the car they are making you pay for?

The car I hit was a company cars (2 days old ) but thankfully it was insured. In any case no details were exchanged so I'm in the clear. The other bloke was more worried about me.

Status edit: I've spoken with the LBS and they've offered me a decent frame (can't remember brand for) for $850 including service/repairs/parts transfer. Apparently the frame is worth $800 on its own so it seems like I'm getting a good deal. While I had been looking at a frame upgrade this wasn't the way I wanted to do it. The subconscious mind maybe...

When I was a kid, my cousin, brother and I fixed our go-kart almost exclusively with duct tape after crashes. It holds up well.

Oh dear... A not so friendly call from the LBS.

Turns out my brifters are completely screwed. I had a feeling they were gone but they got my hopes that they could be fixed. $1000 repair bill so far...

I could show pics, but half the forum would likely puke. If you think the highways and the local knife and gun club are bad, start thinking roadside bombs made out of water heaters.

Don't throw down 800 for a frame you don't know anything about... find out what it is, maybe the forum can give you feedback.

+1.

And are they replacing the brifters? If they're 105 or better, they're giving you a great deal on those...
