The NYC area has a lot going for it: much more than just about anywhere that you mention, except maybe certain parts of California. But not good for the serious cyclist, IMO (yeah, I know about all the great riders, etc.). Even the northeastern part of NJ pretty much sucks for cycing, but we have some very nice riding from about Morristown west.

At the end of the day, you have to honor the social contract (and law) that if someone is in a crosswalk and has the light, they have the right to expect you won't mow them down.

Yes, there are PLENTY of stupid people in Central Park, and I do my best to avoid them. But sometimes they force the issue. Like, running, walking or biking against traffic on the crowded Central Park road, for instance.

But I don't want to be dragged to court because I hit or menaced some nutjob who thought they had to right to do whatever they wanted in the public space. I'll just fix them with the evil eye and move on.

Bah ... bike paths sharpen your bike handling skills. Not to mention many allow you to avoid waiting at intersections.

Im a good cyclist. I dont stop at the stoplights...I ride in between cars making right turns and I speed down shopping center sidewalks(my bike performs best on those). The thing is I'd stop but my bike is heavy and why waste all that kinetic energy I just put in? No start and stop for me I blaze like haze.
