Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How tight should your shoes be?

So here's the problem. My right foot has always been at least 1/2 size bigger than my left foot. I got 2 pairs of shoes, Sidi Ergo 1, size 41, and Genius HT size 41.5. The 41.5 is snug at the toes, has wiggle room, and just a tad of heel lift. Right foot feels great, left a little lose.

the size 41, left foot feel great, but the toes on the right foot are very tight, almost feels a little too tight. Since I'm used to wearing climbing shoes, it doesn't seem too bad. But I have no idea how it'd feel after a long day of riding.

any tips or advise?

I like mine snug but not uncomfortable. I've had to loosen the ratchet a couple of clicks during long rides because my feet expand. Sounds like the 41.5 fits you better.

you should look into getting some custom insoles made. check out aline.com and see if there is a dealer near you that you can talk to. for the short term, you could always wear two socks on the smaller foot to help fill up space.

If my feet are going numb, they're too tight. If they're not going numb, they're too loose

Go with the ultimate Fred look: wear the right that fits well from pair one with the left that fits well from pair two.

I have the same problem - after wearing climbing shoes, everything feels loose!

i'd go with the 41.5's
if your toes are touching the front when you're on the bike (as oppossed to standing) they're too tight. half a thumbs width of wiggle room is the old adage for cycling shoes.
i used to wear ridiculously small climbing shoes too. don't do it with your cycling kicks.

Pretty much like running shoes. They should be tight enough that your feet aren't moving around in them too much but not so tight that your feet hurt. Basically, they should fit comfortably.

Make sure they're different colors. You get bonus Fred points if they are by different manufacturers.

I find that it depends on the season. So for this reason, I tend to go with a half size larger, since I can tighten up my Sidi Dominators in the summer, while still have plenty of circulation for cold weather riding with booties. Eventually, in Wisconsin, nothing works and its time on to do the trainer.

Some folks I work with have two or three pairs of shoes of differing sizes to accomplish the perfect fit for the season.

i have the same problem, my right foot's a 1/2 size bigger than my right foot, and on top of that i also have wide feed. it should go without saying that it took me much longer to find my first pair of bike shoes, than it did my first road bike...

i would advise to mess around with some insole combos first, it's much cheaper than getting 2 different pairs of shoes, and will actually help your knees at the same time. i will say that bike shoe insoles are on the pricey side though, at around $45 a pair, so i would suggest looking into some other insole options that may be a little less expensive...

right now i use the Specialized BG High Performance ++ Footbed in my size 45.5 Sidi Zeta Mega's (that i use for spin class) as an experiment, and so far so good. now, the shoes fits better than they did before, because at first the 45.5's were a bit big and the 45's were definitely too small...

another thing you can do is wear different socks, you don't have to wear bike socks, so either double up on the left foot or wear something thicker on the left foot...

i feel your pain, but good luck and don't lose sleep over it, there's not one person that's perfectly symmetrical...

Tight enough that your shoes stay on, yet loose enough that your toes stay on.

I prefer mine super tight, like vices. No circulation makes winter riding a b1tch though.
