Road Cycling Gloves?
I want to buy some gloves. What kind do you guys have? I'm looking for something comfortable. gel? foam?
I looking at gloves under 25!
and, what size do you recommend? the size of my hand is 7.5'' from the tip of my middle finger to the end of my palm and about 3.5'' wide

PI Gel lite race, half or full finger... around $30 though. Very comfy, padding is perfect.

Just under $25 are the Rivendell gloves./ Plain cotton crocheted back and leather palms with firm padding and a patch of terry cloth on the thumb. Quality leather too, not the cheap chrome tanned kind that stains your hands. XL to XXXL get two sizes larger then you thought you needed.

I like cotton crochet gloves because they give my hands a funky polka dot tan. I also like the lycra backed ones with no velcro closure. I prefer thin padding, gel is good unless too thick. I recommend a fit that is tight. They will loosen up. It's ok if you can't get them off without turning them inside out. You can always put them right side out before putting back on. Probably Large would fit you.

Anyone ever have gel gloves "solidify" on them? I had some Specialized gel gloves in the early 90s, and after a cold ride up City Creek Canyon in SLC (there was still a lot of snow on the ground), the gel inside the gloves solidified into a brittle mass that cracked into hard pieces. Even after the gloves were warmed up, the gel had the consistency of peanut brittle. Both gel and foam can work well if the gloves fit you well. Just make sure there's a large soft patch on the glove for wiping off sweat and snot.

I've only tried a few different kinds, but the cheap pair of Nike gloves I last bought are the best. I don't like to have too much padding - that's what handlebar tape is for. I don't know the exact model, but they were under $20, have thin foam padding on the palm, and mesh on the back of the hand.

I have a pair of Pearl Izumi (PI) foam gloves. I've liked them and they breathe pretty well. I've heard gel gloves don't breathe as well... I don't know. I've only had 1 pair so far.
Check out Amazon.com. I saw a pair of PI Gel-lite gloves for 19.99. And of course Nashbar and Performance Bicycle.
Also, you want your gloves to fit pretty tight. Not uncomfortable, but they shouldn't be loose.

I think glove sizing is based on the circumference of your palm at the knuckles.
Specialized are comfy. I like the pros. More expensive, but no straps.

Terry cloth gloves so you can wipe your nose while riding.

I picked up these in black this morning, put 89 miles on them... nice. Really nice. The site says 35, but my LBS had 'em for 30 even.
Funky link, click on "USA" on the column to your left, it'll take you directly to the product page...

I don't want to completely hijack this thread, so i'll pose my question like this.
Do you all wear gloves for the comfort while riding? or to save your hand in case of a bad crash? (if so what is best for either goal)
I've been thinking of getting some gloves, but the only reason i'd want some is in case I crash (so i wouldn't rip up my palms)

I just got the PI Gel Touring gloves (half finger) from performance and I like them a lot. I have never used so much palm padding but it's good so far

Some guy in the US Open Race yesterday was wearing what appeared to be dish gloves! Of course it was a cold snowy day so I think it was probably a pretty clever idea not to mention a unique style that set him apart from the others!!!

+1...Trek club gloves....$14.99. They work perfectly fine for me. I also have a pair of Gore Windstopper full fingered gloves for cool (not cold) weather riding. They are quite comfortable but the fingetips have worn in less than 2 seasons.
Cheers,
Brian
