Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

First real intervals of the season

oh my lungs. i forgot how difficult these are. I've already done 9 races this season where i've ridden at ~190 bpm sustained over 5 minutes, crits, tt's, mtb races, but that was meager compared to the 4x5's I TRIED to do today (1:1 intensity with recovery). Warmed up for about 30 minutes and felt ok. Rode up a local 1m climb that's probably around 4 or 5% that i've done in excess of 100 times. Oh the pain! Keeping my HR at 180bpm was a suffer fest, and as I got to the 4th one I was dying at 176bpm. I couldn't bear to do the last one so I spun home. My TT HR is around 183bpm, so I was having difficulty riding above threashold...

I did 70 minutes of intensity on Saturday followed by drinking until 6am that day, so i think this may account for some of the pain.

my lungs.. my lungs feel like that first time when you were 15 and took a hit off of a 4 foot bong named "tiny" and coughed for an hour afterwards : )

I hope this get easier, or I hope I manage them better. Stage race this weekend : )

Just kinda curious what training program you're on where you start the intervals after the 9th race?

I think it's a plan from the Troughs Coaching Group.

+1. No point delaying the pain... Better to suffer in training than on race day.

The season starts in February here (arizona), and since I've barely started riding in December I don't have much time between base and racing. I'll be racing and doing intervals through October, so I'm not in a terrible rush to get a lot of intensity done now. 2 or 3 days a week in succession to train for stage races.
