Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

US Open Cycling Championships- April 7th, Richmond, VA

The US Open Cycling championships were held in crazy weather in Richmond, Virginia over the weekend. NBC Sports had delayed same day coverage and I spent my day on the back of a photo moto attempting to cover the race. For a behind the scenes look at the race images:

Pro Men

1 TUFT, Svein Symmetrics
2 MCCARTY, Pat Team Slipstream powered by Chipotle
3 BORRAJO, Alejandro Rite Aid

I watched it, and couldn't believe the condition of the road leading through the industrial ghetto right before the last cobbled climb. Looked like a tough cyclocross course. Guys were bouncing all over the place.

Looked like a pretty decent turnout for as cold as it was.

Far too many commercials for Busch Gardens, Europe (in Williamsburg)!

The Duff Gardens commercials fund the TV coverage, it's better than watching the Master's for 17 f-ing hours.

The bad roads were worse than the cobbles, but the cobbles are an attempt to mimic the French, who everyone hates.

It was a decent turnout, but not in comparison to Belgium and the Tour of Flanders -they had 1 million watching on the roads sunday.

Did anyone else find the 8 (I think) circuits sorta dull? It's great if you're there to see them come past so often, but watching it on TV I got bored watching them go around and around.

Maybe that's not fair, though. I watched it on Tivo on Sunday afternoon after watching the Tour of Flanders that morning on Cycle TV.

I was trying to watch it as a casual sports fan might, though, and I wonder if a baseball fan would just say, "All they're doing is going around and around," and switch to something else.

Then why is NASCAR so freakin' popular?

as opposed to watching fat guys tap little balls at "The Masters"?
as opposed to watching fat guys scratch themselves for three hours in the outfield?
as opposed to watching fat guys drive in circles at Daytona?

It's no "Celebrity Poker", but at least it shows some effort.

Good point, and I have no idea. I've never understood the popularity of watching hillbillies drive around and around.

Well, of course, the answer is complex, but given that we live in a society where standing around scratching for 3 hours or walking 18 holes is beyond most people, I'd imagine one reason people are disinclined to watch bike racing is the effort is uncomprehensible to them.

Bike racing focuses on suffering, and suffering for most people watching sports on a weekend is not having enough beer and chips.

My only point was that races which go from one town to another then finish with, say 2 circuits rather than 8, might make for better TV for casual fans.

Thanks for the compliment. The photo moto driver was amazing..... he had me in the thick of it for the entire 112 miles. Aside from the small fact that I couldn't feel my face or my fingers at times it was a great day!

Nice photos. This was my first time attending a race of this caliber. What was really fun to watch was the jostling of the race official cars, team cars and motorcycles in some of the tighter turns along the circut course.
